{"id":41102,"date":"2023-12-06T20:59:20","date_gmt":"2023-12-07T00:59:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelaker.ca\/?p=41102"},"modified":"2023-12-06T20:59:20","modified_gmt":"2023-12-07T00:59:20","slug":"end-of-an-era-patrons-recall-fun-times-at-curlys-in-enfield-as-tear-down-begins","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/?p=41102","title":{"rendered":"End of an era: Patrons recall fun times at Curly&#8217;s in Enfield as tear down begins"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;78&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;115&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ENFIELD:<\/strong> The demolition of a historic Enfield landmark has begun, leaving its past patrons with many fond memories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Work began on Wednesday afternoon to tear down the former Curly Portables Pub and Grub on Highway 2 in Enfield.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A few people had gathered mid-afternoon to watch as the excavator tore into the building, tearing it down with what appeared to be much ease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The well-known business opened in 1984 and overcame a fire in 1990 to reopen six months later. It closed for good in 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ADVERTISEMENT:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;190&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;84&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jim Isenor, who owned the business and property it sits on, was among those on hand watching as it was being torn down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said the property remains for sale, after a proposed development that had been pitched was turned down by East Hants council.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Isenor said theoretically the property will become a development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Curly\u2019s in Enfield being torn down\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/j412GywfWaw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>As work began to tear it down, people relayed the message and when video and photos began posting on social media and The Laker News Facebook page people who had been patrons to the restaurant began reminiscing of the times they went there and their memories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said tearing the building down should help him save some money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve been paying commercial taxes on it for the last four years, an empty building,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ADVERTISEMENT:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;111&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;92&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Laker News asked people what their fond memories of Curly\u2019s was. Here are just a sample of the responses from our Facebook page post.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sandy Totten remembered fond times from her visits to Curly\u2019s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThursday nights were hopping in my day, If you didn\u2019t show by 9:30, you didn\u2019t get in,\u201d Totten recalled in a Facebook comment. \u201cThe music, the dancing, the laughter. Some of the best times of my young adult life.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe food in the early years when they won the Taste of Nova Scotia. My favourite menu item was the Bunkhouse Billy Jawbuster,\u201d said Gerald Doutre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Travis Ashley said who could forget the Thursday night at Curly&#8217;s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat&#8217;s where me and my wife Lorrie used to go when we first started dating,\u201d he said. \u201cUse to be a guy that would come around through the night that you could buy flowers from and the pizza at the end, so good.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/IMG_7029-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-41104\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">(Healey photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ADVERTISEMENT:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate group=&#8221;2&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;206&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Matt Doudelet said the Beach Party\u2019s were memorable\u2014or not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBest memory I can come up with is that &#8211; I don\u2019t have any memory from any nights there. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/hashtag\/beachparty?__eep__=6&amp;__cft__%5b0%5d=AZVBOhapomW52sQ_DzU9R8OqG4Z1ZhaPSX-ETvnxVzdxzgZuVenGdy5EAz2usY6aZPliCuSdpRY-k1fkCwd-iyRUVrN6OHcaf70muKOvveQGsmDc52HeTQZU9c53HaQtLqA0qh6Q8es5SGgOf0VXhQRAOfcON0dmZRGhvt-k9fNeWfuQ-D0ZhF2kXl0KdFEhi9w&amp;__tn__=R%5d-R\">#BeachParty<\/a>,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Elisa Christensen of Windsor Junction said Curly\u2019s was the first place she ever had a Mozza Stick.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cindy Renouf had a story about Curly\u2019s from her days as an RCMP officer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDriving a prisoner back to Enfield Detachment by myself on a Thursday night, no back up available and there was a full-scale brawl in the parking lot of Curly\u2019s as I was driving past,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI flipped on my siren, jumped out on the hood of the police car, and started to shake my canister of pepper spray saying, \u2018who else wants to go to jail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe parking lot very quickly cleared out.
