{"id":41799,"date":"2024-01-07T08:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-01-07T12:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelaker.ca\/?p=41799"},"modified":"2024-01-07T08:00:00","modified_gmt":"2024-01-07T12:00:00","slug":"bringing-transit-to-fall-river-could-bring-added-costs-to-residents","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/?p=41799","title":{"rendered":"Bringing transit to Fall River could bring added costs to residents"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;93&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;127&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>FALL RIVER:<\/strong> Bringing transit to Fall River appears to be more complicated then the local councillor even thought it would be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cathy Deagle Gammon, the newly elected in Deputy Mayor and representative for Waverley-Fall River-Musquodoboit Valley, was responding to part of a question from The Laker News during a year end interview to 2023 and a look ahead at 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It doesn\u2019t appear that getting transit into Fall River is as easy as pie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m doing everything that I can to try to bring transit here to Fall River,\u201d said Deagle Gammon with Charlie her dog on her lap inside her home in the community. \u201cThat&#8217;s the big challenge for me coming into 2024 because we desperately need to figure it out.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A<strong>DVERTISEMENT:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;206&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;31&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She was asked if when it does come forward if that\u2019s the time for the community to stand with her and inform the transit authority why it&#8217;s important for this community and why it\u2019s so desperately needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think it&#8217;s a much more complicated story than anybody ever thought,\u201d said Deagle Gammon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOpening up the transit service boundary for discussion is the first step, second is articulating the need and evidence that there will be ridership (community engagement here will be essential), then determining the cost \u2026. And that\u2019s a big question.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ADVERTISEMENT:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;207&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She said it\u2019s a question that the local residents even need to know ahead of time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat&#8217;s a piece of work that I have to do because there is a transit tax that gets charged if you are within a certain distance to transit\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe don&#8217;t pay that right now. So that would be another increase in our taxes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ADVERTISEMENT:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;71&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That could make a difference in whether people want transit in the community as much as it appears they do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPeople need to understand that, and as councillor, my job is to make sure that the right information is in front of people so when they say yes, we want transit, they also have the right information to say this is the impact of that,\u201d said Deagle Gammon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis is what it will cost, all of those kinds of things.
