{"id":42772,"date":"2024-02-16T08:17:00","date_gmt":"2024-02-16T12:17:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelaker.ca\/?p=42772"},"modified":"2024-02-16T08:17:00","modified_gmt":"2024-02-16T12:17:00","slug":"canon-beazley-chosen-as-iwks-2024-childrens-miracle-network-champion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/?p=42772","title":{"rendered":"Canon Beazley chosen as IWK\u2019s 2024 Children\u2019s Miracle Network Champion"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;169&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;93&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>HALIFAX:<\/strong> A 13-year-old from Dartmouth, who is currently a patient at the IWK, has been chosen as the 2024 Children\u2019s Miracle Network\u00ae Champion for the IWK. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A special event to announce Canon Beazley as Champion was held at the Dartmouth South Walmart on Feb. 15.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Children\u2019s Miracle Network Champion program brings together children representing children\u2019s hospital foundations across Canada and the United States. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Throughout 2024, as Champion, Canon will represent children and youth who receive specialized treatment and care at IWK Health. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ADVERTISEMENT:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;54&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;31&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;148&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Canon will share his story to support fundraising campaigns and events in the Maritimes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSince their experience at the IWK, Canon and his family have been dedicated supporters of the IWK Foundation, sharing their story to raise awareness and give back,\u201d says Melanie Matheson, Manager, Community &amp; Corporate Giving, IWK Foundation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> \u201cWe are thrilled to name Canon as this year\u2019s IWK Children\u2019s Miracle Network Champion, representing the IWK locally, nationally and internationally. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;He is resilient, intelligent and a true inspiration to us all.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ADVERTISEMENT:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;192&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;71&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2021, Canon was diagnosed with Stage 1 Wilms Tumour, a form of kidney cancer, and underwent surgery to remove his left kidney and tumour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> After undergoing 26 weeks of chemotherapy at the IWK, Canon officially \u201crang the bell,\u201d signifying the end of his treatment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Shortly after, however, he began experiencing debilitating panic attacks and mental health struggles and was diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) stemming from his cancer experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Through regular therapy sessions, medication and the continued support of his family and IWK care teams, Canon is doing well today. He is back to enjoying the things he loves, including hockey and paddling. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ADVERTISEMENT:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;34&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;127&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Canon has even started hosting an annual \u201cHouse of Doom\u201d Halloween fundraiser for the IWK, which has been incredibly successful year after year. Canon is feeling better than ever and is eager to take on his new role as Champion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI am very proud to have been chosen to represent the IWK as the 2024 Children&#8217;s Miracle Network Champion,\u201d says Canon. \u201cThe IWK has given me so much, and it makes me very happy to be able to represent them and help them continue to help kids like me. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m excited to meet other Champion children and have fun while supporting our children&#8217;s hospitals.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ADVERTISEMENT:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate group=&#8221;6&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;190&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Canon and his family will travel to Orlando, Florida to participate in events at Children\u2019s Hospitals Week with other patients and their families from across North America who know first-hand the importance of having access to critical and specialized pediatric care. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Children\u2019s Hospitals Week is proudly supported through the sponsorship of Children\u2019s Miracle Network partners Walmart Canada, The Brick, Air Canada Foundation, DQ Canada and Marriott.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This year, the IWK Foundation is celebrating 40 years of community giving.
