{"id":44177,"date":"2024-04-10T07:30:00","date_gmt":"2024-04-10T10:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelaker.ca\/?p=44177"},"modified":"2024-04-10T07:30:00","modified_gmt":"2024-04-10T10:30:00","slug":"spring-legislative-session-saw-building-up-nova-scotians-as-focus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/?p=44177","title":{"rendered":"Spring legislative session saw building up Nova Scotians as focus"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;105&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;192&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>From a release:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>HALIFAX:<\/strong> A $16.5-billion budget that includes a new lunch program for public school students, support for people living with diabetes, income-tax relief and more resources for housing and healthcare was the focus of the spring session of the House of Assembly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Spring legislative sessionw rapped up on April 5.<br \/><br \/>Budget 2024-25: Building Nova Scotia, Faster contains measures to make life more affordable, including launching a provincewide school lunch program that will roll out over the next four years and indexing tax brackets and other tax credits \u2013 starting January 1, 2025 \u2013 to keep more money in Nova Scotians\u2019 pockets.<br \/><br \/>These measures amount to the largest tax break in the province\u2019s history and will save Nova Scotians as much as $160 million per year in taxes by 2028.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ADVERTISEMENT:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;93&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;206&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The budget will also help cover the cost of sensor-based glucose monitors and remove the age cap on the insulin pump program.\u00a0<br \/><br \/>\u201cMaking life more affordable and investing in new housing, schools, hospitals, roads and highways \u2013 this budget supports all of this and so much more,\u201d said Premier Tim Houston. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re pleased to pass a budget that invests in a brighter future for all Nova Scotians.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Legislation was tabled to create a new Department of Emergency Management and establish the Nova Scotia Guard, volunteers with specialty skills and members of the public who will fill a variety of roles depending on emergency needs and will be overseen by the new department.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHelping their fellow Nova Scotians in emergencies is the Bluenoser way, whether it\u2019s grabbing a shovel to dig people out of the snow or making food for people impacted by wildfires.
