{"id":44233,"date":"2024-04-11T21:10:50","date_gmt":"2024-04-12T00:10:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelaker.ca\/?p=44233"},"modified":"2024-04-11T21:10:50","modified_gmt":"2024-04-12T00:10:50","slug":"n-s-teachers-vote-98-per-cent-for-strike-mandate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/?p=44233","title":{"rendered":"N.S. teachers vote 98 per cent for strike mandate"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;188&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;169&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>HALIFAX:<\/strong> Nova Scotia\u2019s teachers and educational specialists have sent a resounding wake-up call to government that it can no longer continue to ignore the many crises boiling over inside our public schools.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a province-wide electronic vote held April 11, more than 10,000 NSTU members (including substitute teachers who were eligible to vote) voted\u00a098 per cent\u00a0in favour of strike action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTeachers are frustrated by rapidly declining conditions inside their schools, and by Government\u2019s lack of action to provide safe and healthy learning environments for students,\u201d says NSTU President Ryan Lutes. \u201cTeachers want the escalating levels of violence they are witnessing addressed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;They want to see resources allocated to help solve the mental health crisis inside schools. They want to see a plan to end the teacher shortage that focuses on retention and ensures that our substitutes aren\u2019t among the lowest paid in Canada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8221;\u00a0Teachers want Government to come to the table and be prepared to negotiate a fair contract in the best interest of students, teachers and families, but so far that just hasn\u2019t been the case.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ADVERTISEMENT:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;31&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;210&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lutes says that teachers would prefer not to strike, but will take action if&nbsp;this&nbsp;government doesn\u2019t start taking the challenges facing students and their teachers seriously.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat teachers are saying with this vote is that the status quo is unacceptable and unstainable, and they aren\u2019t prepared to sit idly by while the situation grows worse. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It\u2019s time to fix our schools. Our kids and their teachers deserve better.
