WINDSOR JUNCTION:<\/strong> A Lockview High school student has been named one of the regional winners in the Rideau Hall Foundation\u2019s Ingenious+ innovation competition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Madeline McIntyre was recently presented with her regional award by N.S. Lieutenant Governor Arthur J. LeBlanc at a ceremony at Province House in Halifax.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She was among a group of award winners, all of whom are being called Canadian changemakers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The project she is doing is focused on environmental issues used mycelium to extract contaminants from the soil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI found out I won about four days before the ceremony,\u201d McIntyre said. \u201cIt felt amazing to know I won.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She said she had learned about the Indigenous+ awards and entered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

McIntyre initially learned about the awards even existing from hearing it on Spotify then searching it up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI thought it would be a good opportunity to use mushrooms for the environmental purpose as they do have a lot of potential,\u201d McIntyre said during an interview at a Fall River coffee shop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis would be a good chance to apply this knowledge to the project.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After the Grade 10 student researched it, she decided to apply for the competition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt took about four weeks for me to work on my project,\u201d said MacIntyre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

McIntyre said her dad called her from work to let her know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI was super happy and excited,\u201d she recalled of her reaction to finding out. \u201cI was like \u201coh my gosh I did win the regional awards.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt means a lot to me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She said it shows she can use mushrooms to do something for the environment. McIntyre is getting mentorship help and money to work on the project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThat will help me make the project a reality so I will be able to filter soil,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What\u2019s the next step?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m going to be experimenting with different types of mushrooms and hopefully be able to find some contaminated soil to experiment with,\u201d said McIntyre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
