{"id":45374,"date":"2024-05-23T12:54:15","date_gmt":"2024-05-23T15:54:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelaker.ca\/?p=45374"},"modified":"2024-05-23T12:54:15","modified_gmt":"2024-05-23T15:54:15","slug":"some-post-secondary-students-to-receive-more-assistance-due-to-provincial-changes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/?p=45374","title":{"rendered":"Some post-secondary students to receive more assistance due to provincial changes"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;127&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;188&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>HALIFAX: <\/strong>The Advanced Education Minister said May 22 that some Nova Scotia post-secondary students will receive more in student assistance starting this fall because of a change to part of the funding formula.<br \/><br \/>Brian Wong, who is also the MLA for Waverley-Fall River-Beaver Bank, said the updated formula aligns the Nova Scotia Student Assistance program with the federal Canada Student Financial Assistance program. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This change better reflects the financial pressures students are facing from current housing and living costs.<a><br \/><br \/><\/a>\u201cWe\u2019re listening to students and want to make it more affordable for students to stay and build a life here after they graduate,\u201d said Wong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs a province, Nova Scotia continues to make significant investments to help students impacted by the cost of living, including housing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ADVERTISEMENT:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;31&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;192&#8243;]<a><br \/><br \/><\/a>Nova Scotia typically follows the federal government\u2019s formula for calculating assistance. Part of the formula considers basic living expenses \u2013 called a living allowance in the calculation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The allowance, which has previously increased based on the consumer price index, now reflects information in the 2022 Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation Rental Market Survey. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A higher living allowance in the formula means a student may qualify for more assistance.<a><br \/><\/a><br \/>Earlier this year, Nova Scotia also made other investments to help reduce the cost of living for students.
