{"id":45525,"date":"2024-05-27T23:34:17","date_gmt":"2024-05-28T02:34:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelaker.ca\/?p=45525"},"modified":"2024-05-27T23:34:17","modified_gmt":"2024-05-28T02:34:17","slug":"new-heart-disease-clinic-honours-jordan-boyds-lasting-legacy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/?p=45525","title":{"rendered":"New heart disease clinic honours Jordan Boyd&#8217;s lasting legacy"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;169&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;105&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>HALIFAX:<\/strong> In a significant moment for cardiac care, the QEII Foundation proudly unveiled the new Jordan Boyd Inherited Heart Disease Clinic at the QEII Health Sciences Centre in Halifax.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The clinic\u2019s new name is a tribute to the late Jordan Boyd; a 16-year-old, Bedford hockey player who tragically lost his life in 2013 to an undiagnosed inherited heart condition called Arrhythmogenic Right Ventricular Cardiomyopathy (ARVC).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Members of Jordan\u2019s family, media and healthcare providers gathered for the official naming and ribbon-cutting ceremony on May 23 on what would have been Jordan\u2019s 27th birthday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This historic milestone celebrates Jordan\u2019s lasting legacy and the incredible impact created in his memory by the Boyd family and their supporters. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ADVERTISEMENT:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;93&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;31&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For over a decade, the Boyd family has been on a mission to help prevent sudden death from cardiac arrest for other families. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To date, they\u2019ve raised $1.2 million net \u2013 in partnership with the QEII Foundation \u2013 funding pivotal inherited heart disease research at the same QEII clinic that\u2019s now named in Jordan\u2019s honour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s a full circle moment for the Boyd family, whose journey began with a profound loss but evolved into a powerful movement and rallying point for change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe Jordan Boyd Inherited Heart Disease Clinic allows us to continue establishing a legacy for our son, carry on his compassion and caring for others, and fulfil a promise that he will not be forgotten,\u201d said Stephen Boyd, Jordan\u2019s father. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cToday\u2019s unveiling is such a proud moment for our family and for everyone who has supported us and continues to support us in this journey.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ADVERTISEMENT:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;34&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;127&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That journey has included eight community events \u2013 like the <em>Jordan Boyd Celebrity Hockey Challenge<\/em>&nbsp;and <em>Jordan Boyd Celebrity Golf Challenge<\/em>&nbsp;\u2013 fueling life-saving research for future families and countless initiatives to raise awareness of and access to AEDs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A direct result of the Boyd family&#8217;s advocacy and fundraising efforts, Jordan\u2019s name has become synonymous with impact \u2013 keeping the hockey player\u2019s legacy alive all while improving the lives of those facing inherited heart disease in our region and, in some cases, across Canada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s why today\u2019s unveiling of the Jordan Boyd Inherited Heart Disease Clinic is such a fitting tribute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWithout a doubt, the Boyd family has moved the needle in inherited heart disease research,\u201d said Dr. Martin Gardner, cardiologist and founder of the Jordan Boyd Inherited Heart Disease Clinic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Jordan-Boyd-IHD-Clinic-Unveiling-3-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-45526\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The clinic officially opened last week. This national ARVC registry \u2014 which tracks patient and family data from inherited heart disease clinics across the country \u2014 helps ensure QEII clinicians better understand the incidence of ARVC and sudden cardiac arrest, and, in some cases, which patients may benefit most from a clinical trial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Increasing clinic time from one day per week to four, which allows the team to treat more patients and families \u2013 making complex diagnoses faster, reducing wait times so teams can intervene earlier, and minimizing the risk of dangerous heart rhythms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Creating the Jordan Boyd Memorial Scholarship. The inaugural scholarship was awarded to Dr. Ciorsti MacIntyre in 2016, enabling her to complete a six-month fellowship at the Mayo Clinic; a world-renowned centre in inherited heart disease.
