Vanier Junior High left everything they had out on the running track in Cape Breton last week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Vanier Vipers junior high girls 4 x 400 metre team and a triple jumper ended their junior high careers on top with gold medals around their necks from the School Sport Nova Scotia (SSNS) provincial track and field championships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Josie Luedey of Waverley; Avah Nicholson of Wellington; Charlotte Whitman of Wellington; and Ava Manley of Waverley make up the 4 x 400 metres squad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Waverley\u2019s Addison Labucki took the gold in jr. high girls triple jump.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The championships were held at CBU in Cape Breton.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ADVERTISEMENT:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;111&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;190&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Charlotte Whitman knew exactly what it meant to win the gold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cIt was pure joy,\u201d she told The Laker News. \u201cWe worked really hard for it.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cComing second last year was good experience for us so we knew we could do it this year.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She said in the last leg she could see the silver medallist right behind her and see the finish line within sight. The handoff was clean, but it felt scary since she didn\u2019t want to let her team down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI knew I could do it and with everyone cheering me on I was able to finish strong and get us gold,\u201d she said. \u201cIt felt amazing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Luedey said the team knew they had it in them to accomplish the goal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe just had to push hard to do it,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ADVERTISEMENT:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate group=&#8221;8&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;115&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She said it was really close the last two runners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt was really exciting and nervous watching my teammates after I went,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Manley said the gold means a lot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cWith it being our final year in junior high, I think us winning gold is amazing and will be a memory we hold onto for the rest of our lives,\u201d said Manley.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The hard work we did paid off this year to get the win.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEverything worked out, and we felt ready to do it,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nicholson said the team hopes to continue on as a group when they move to Lockview next year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt means a lot for our race that we won gold,\u201d she said. \u201cIt was a lot of joy when we finished, and we saw that it said gold.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ADVERTISEMENT:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;192&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate group=&#8221;7&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Labucki jumped 10.13 metres to capture gold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cIt was amazing to win gold,\u201d she said. \u201cI was proud of myself for being able to do it.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>She said there was a lot of training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe practiced a lot in the gym,\u201d she said. \u201cBut it was more a mental game to be able to do it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Labucki said she was surprised to be atop the overall standings.
