{"id":46940,"date":"2024-07-16T20:38:02","date_gmt":"2024-07-16T23:38:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelaker.ca\/?p=46940"},"modified":"2024-07-16T20:38:02","modified_gmt":"2024-07-16T23:38:02","slug":"cheema-athletes-to-don-maple-leaf-at-world-canoe-kayak-championships","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/?p=46940","title":{"rendered":"Cheema athletes to don Maple Leaf at world Canoe\/Kayak championships"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;105&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;148&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>WAVERLEY:<\/strong> Six athletes from Cheema Aquatic Club are excited and ready to soak it all in wearing the Maple Leaf at international competitions over the summer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Megan Thompson; Jacy Grant; Cam Hall; Ella Cozens; Emerson Eisener; and Alec MacAulay were treated like superstars during the send-off each getting a roaring chant from the youngsters at summer camp, although MacAulay seemed to be the favoured of them all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The six were recognized with a send off last week at the club with many cheering youngsters looking to be them one day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Beginning July 17, Jacy Grant of Wellington; and Fall River\u2019s Cam Hall, Ella Cozens, and Emmerson Eisener will be hitting the water at the Under-23 worlds and ICF Jr (U18) world championships in Plovdiv, Bulgaria from July 17-21.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Grant will compete in Women\u2019s canoe ay U23 worlds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hall will be competing in ICF Jr worlds in men\u2019s canoe. Justin Boyko, who competes out of Calgary, was at the send off as well and soaking it all in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cozens and Eisener will take the water in Jr worlds in women\u2019s canoe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>MacAulay and Eisener will take part at Olympic Hopes in September.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/IMG_0220-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-46942\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The six Cheema athletes representing Team Canada and Coach Csom (middle) (Healey photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ADVERTISEMENT:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;192&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;67&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This will be Grant\u2019s second time at U23 worlds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m thrilled to be able to go to U23 worlds,&#8221; she said. \u201cI\u2019m very excited about going.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She was asked what advice she is able to give to the others from the club going to be part of Canoe Kayak Canada\u2019s team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI told them to just enjoy it and take pride in representing your country, and getting the experience,\u201d said Grant. \u201cJust enjoy it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She said to have this many\u2014six\u2014going to wear the Canadian colours for a small club like Cheema is a big deal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis is huge for Cheema,\u201d said Grant. \u201cI\u2019ve never seen as athletes to go to Jr and U23 worlds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think it really reflects how well the programming is going here, what everyone here does. It\u2019s really nice to see it on this level.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/IMG_0291-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-46948\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">(Healey photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ADVERTISEMENT:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;218&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;111&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m excited to have this opportunity,\u201d said Thompson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t believe that I\u2019m going, but I\u2019m looking forward to it, added Eisener.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Eisener will be racing C2, 500-metre for U18, C1, 500 and 200 at Olympic Hopes, while &nbsp;Thompson is set tor ace C1 500 and 200 in u17 at Olympic Hopes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They were stoked at the turnout for their sendoff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t believe it, there\u2019s so many kids,\u201d said Eisener.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI feel really supported by them all,\u201d added Thompson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ADVERTISEMENT:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;188&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;78&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The two said they were those young kids just a few years ago looking up to the likes of Sloan MacKenzie and Jacy Grant and wanting to be them one day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI remember looking up to others, so it feels pretty good to be the one that those young girls and boys are looking up to,\u201d said Thompson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m really happy I can be that athlete for those kids,\u201d said Eisener.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hall said he\u2019s very excited to represent the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s going to be an awesome time,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ADVERTISEMENT:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;71&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;169&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cozens agreed. She will race in the C2, 500-metre and the mixed relay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m excited for the experience,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Both thought the huge crowd was great.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s awesome to see the future of Cheema here, and hopefully all of us can inspire them,\u201d said Hall, who will race in the C2, 500-metre; C2, 1000-metre and the C4, 500-metre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The two said they have been given some advice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve been told it\u2019s going to be hot,\u201d he said. \u201cWe\u2019re there for the experience and to soak it in, but we\u2019re going to r ace as hard as we can and that\u2019s the best we can do.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/IMG_0289-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-46947\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Ice cream is served.
