NDP: Service industry workers deserve to keep tips"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;169&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;127&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>HALIFAX:<\/strong> It\u2019s the middle of patio season and Nova Scotians and tourists are filling restaurants across the province.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Summer is a busy time for service industry workers who rely on tips and gratuities to get by, but customers may not know where their tips are going.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen customers leave a tip, they expect it will go to the person serving them. But that doesn\u2019t always happen because there is no legislation to ensure workers can keep their tips and gratuities,\u201d said NSNDP leader Claudia Chender. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMost service industry workers like servers, bartenders and cooks make below a living wage and rely on tips to survive.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ADVERTISEMENT:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;34&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;210&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The NSNDP introduced legislation in both 2018 and 2023 to ban tip theft. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Houston government has not moved ahead on this issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Workers\u2019 Action Centre in Halifax conducted a survey which found that about half of respondents depended on tips to make ends meet, and nearly three-quarters have had some experience with tip theft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re getting that tip because you\u2019ve been working hard, you\u2019re working long hours, you\u2019re doing a good job,&#8221; WAC community organizer Noah Enns. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Especially when things have gotten so expensive, these tips are what\u2019s allowing people to make ends meet and pay their bills on time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ADVERTISEMENT:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;31&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate group=&#8221;6&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re the only province in Atlantic Canada without legislation targeting tip theft,&#8221; added Enns. &#8220;Clearly, there isn\u2019t the political will to close that gap, and it\u2019s a huge oversight.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The NSNDP is committed to improving conditions for workers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The caucus has also introduced legislation to ban scab labour during strikes and lockouts and implement 10 permanent paid sick days for all Nova Scotians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;92&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;188&#8243;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;169&#8243;] [adrotate banner=&#8221;127&#8243;] HALIFAX: It\u2019s the middle of patio season and Nova Scotians and tourists are filling restaurants across the province.
