{"id":48433,"date":"2024-09-17T19:51:13","date_gmt":"2024-09-17T22:51:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelaker.ca\/?p=48433"},"modified":"2024-09-17T19:51:13","modified_gmt":"2024-09-17T22:51:13","slug":"cycling-group-waverley-road-ents-mark-150th-ride-milestone","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/?p=48433","title":{"rendered":"Cycling group Waverley Road-ents mark 150th ride milestone"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;127&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;169&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>GRAND LAKE:<\/strong> A cycling group from the Halifax area hit the road last Wednesday for special moment for the group\u2014their 150<sup>th<\/sup> ride.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The group, named the Waverley Road-ents, are a group of usually about 20 and 25 members, but on this day approximately 15 or so cyclists met up at Laurie Park in Grand Lake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They geared up before hitting Highway 2 towards the old school house out near Horne Settlement Road and returning, with a stop at the Enfield Tim Hortons for social time and to refuel with food.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the group got ready to head out members caught up quickly with what the others had been doing the past week, and others warmed up with smiles on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/IMG_4729-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-48434\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The group gears up to go. (Healey photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ADVERTISEMENT:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;34&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;92&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As 10 am hit, the Waverley Road-ents leader Toru Ochiai from Tokyo gathered the group together,.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once The Laker News was positioned to get video and photos of them leaving, he gave the command to start.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As they left Laurie Park, a construction worker stopped traffic coming from Wellington allowing the cyclists to get out on the road safely and start their trek.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s very special,\u201d said Ochiai of the 150<sup>th<\/sup> ride. \u201cIt\u2019s funny because every day is the same, so nothing special.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBut we are so addicted to this group that the most important part is the chatting, the social part at the coffee shop.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The group was started five years ago and used to travel from Laurie Park down towards Waverley Road, but since construction began on the Aerotech Connector they switched directions and go 40 kilometres round trip to near the gated community in Monte Vista, then head back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt never gets old (cycling together0,\u201d he said. \u201cEverybody likes to get together and cycle then chit chat over coffee. \u201c<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/IMG_4933-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-48445\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">A smiling cyclist as vehicles move safely around her giving the space needed. (Healey photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ADVERTISEMENT:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;31&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;148&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pamela Robertson, one of the avid and loyal cyclists who makes the ride part of her weekly Wednesday routine, spoke of how the name came about \u2013 the Waverley Road-ents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s an off shoot of Nova Scotia Ramblers, and then we had the Railers that do the BLT and Salt Marsh Trail, and since we\u2019re cycling this road we\u2019re the Road-ents,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 150th ride begins: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Waverley Road-ents mark 150th ride\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/mi2mmWtJr3Y?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The trucks were a bit too close along Hwy 2 to Waverley Road so that was one reason for the route change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOnce they started putting in the Wellington Connector, the trucks were a bit to close to us as we cycled so we decided to go up towards Enfield,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a lovely ride.
