{"id":51607,"date":"2025-01-17T07:30:00","date_gmt":"2025-01-17T11:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelaker.ca\/?p=51607"},"modified":"2025-01-17T07:30:00","modified_gmt":"2025-01-17T11:30:00","slug":"cap-condemns-continued-exclusion-from-mmiwg-roundtable","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/?p=51607","title":{"rendered":"CAP condemns continued exclusion from MMIWG Roundtable"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;188&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;105&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>From a release<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>OTTAWA, ONT.:<\/strong> The Congress of Aboriginal Peoples (CAP) is deeply disappointed to be uninvited and excluded once again from participation at the upcoming National Indigenous-Federal-Provincial-Territorial (IFPT) Roundtable on Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and 2SLGBTQI+ People, scheduled for January 29-30, 2025, in Ottawa. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This exclusion perpetuates the politicization of MMIWG discussions and denies CAP\u2019s unique voice on behalf of off-reserve, non-status, Southern Inuit and urban Indigenous communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis exclusion is a blatant disregard for the realities of Indigenous women who live off-reserve. Violence against Indigenous women does not stop at reserve boundaries, yet the government continues to ignore our people,\u201d says CAP National Chief Brendan Moore. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt is unacceptable that Indigenous women\u2019s safety is being used as a political tool.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ADVERTISEMENT:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;127&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate group=&#8221;7&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During last year\u2019s Roundtable, several Indigenous organizations, including Les Femmes Michif Otipemisiwak, the National Family and Survivors Circle, and the Ontario Native Women\u2019s Association, expressed support for CAP\u2019s inclusion. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite these calls, the federal government continues to uphold a discriminatory hierarchy that excludes the very communities most impacted by violence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>CAP has been a national advocate for non-status and off-reserve Indigenous peoples for over 50 years. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ADVERTISEMENT:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;71&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Supreme Court of Canada\u2019s\u00a0<em>Daniels v. Canada<\/em>\u00a0decision affirmed the federal government\u2019s responsibility to these communities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Excluding CAP from discussions on MMIWG is contrary to Canada\u2019s reconciliation commitments and violates principles outlined in the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are calling on Minister (Gary) Anandasangaree to ensure CAP\u2019s full participation at this month\u2019s Roundtable,\u201d added Chief Moore. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIndigenous women\u2019s safety must never be politicized.
