{"id":52353,"date":"2025-02-17T06:30:00","date_gmt":"2025-02-17T10:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelaker.ca\/?p=52353"},"modified":"2025-02-17T06:30:00","modified_gmt":"2025-02-17T10:30:00","slug":"multicultural-festival-an-educational-learning-experience-for-dutch-settlement-students","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/?p=52353","title":{"rendered":"Multicultural festival an educational learning experience for Dutch Settlement students"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;232&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;111&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>DUTCH SETTLEMENT:<\/strong> Grade 6 students at Dutch Settlement Elementary School (DSES) got to go on a worldwide adventure without leaving the gymnasium at their school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The students participated in the annual Multicultural Festival put on under the guidance of Teacher John Ardley.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There were many countries selected by the students who researched each one and did a presentation or made goodies based on food that would be popular or from that country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The gymnasium was full with each student setup and members of the community at large and students in the school coming down and getting to learn about each country from the students themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ADVERTISEMENT:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;87&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;218&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Olivia Huerton did her project on Jamaica. She spoke very well of where the country is located, including neighbouring countries Haiti and Cuba, along with the seasons they experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She made Jamaican Patties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt is spicy kind of meat in the middle and batter around it,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI wanted to do it because I thought it would taste good and it\u2019s a very popular dish in Jamaica.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Olivia said she enjoyed participating in the Multicultural Festival at the school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI get to learn about countries from around the world,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>John Nicholson did his project all about Mongolia, located in Central Asia. He had no food at his table, so he wasn\u2019t seeing many people stop by his table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI found it very interesting how Mongolia is located between two of the biggest powers in the world that are Communists, and they became a democracy,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI thought it was very brave for them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He did a slide-show presentation that was displayed on a laptop nearby. It included information about their sports; government; food; climate; history, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>John worked on his project for the full five weeks that students had been given by Mr. Ardley.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ADVERTISEMENT:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate group=&#8221;2&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;115&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ayla Hill had a good reason on why she chose to do her project on the Netherlands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI have a little bit of Dutch in me and so did my oma (grandmother),\u201d said Ayla.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She made Oliebollen for the students and attendees to try.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s an Old fashion Dutch donut,\u201d she said. \u201cIt is traditionally eaten on New Years.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ayla enjoyed the work she had to do into her project and being part of the multicultural festival.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe best part of today for me is that I get to share some of my culture,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI really like that I get to share this with my peers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She also thought it was educational.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think it\u2019s great that we all get to learn about different countries around the world that we may not have known,\u201d said Ayla.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bria Bonner did her project on Sweden, which including researching and then making Swedish Sticky Chocolate Cake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI heard it\u2019s a very nice country and has a lot of exciting things in it,\u201d said TBA TBA, adding that among those nice things is an ice hotel; and schools are great.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI wanted to do some research on the schools there.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She said the food she made is a type of brownie chocolate cake with powdered sugar on top.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI heard a lot people like it in Sweden, and its one of the main deserts,\u201d said TBA<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bria said she really enjoyed the day.
