{"id":53459,"date":"2025-04-01T11:37:15","date_gmt":"2025-04-01T14:37:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelaker.ca\/?p=53459"},"modified":"2025-04-01T11:37:15","modified_gmt":"2025-04-01T14:37:15","slug":"herh-students-chaperones-return-from-european-adventure","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/?p=53459","title":{"rendered":"HERH students, chaperones return from European adventure"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;111&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;78&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>MILFORD:<\/strong> Forty-four students from Hants East Rural High and six chaperones just returned from an 11-day adventure to Europe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The trip, called Canada\u2019s Battlefields, saw them go through Amsterdam, Belgium, France, with stops to honour our lost war heroes from World War I and World War II.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trevor Comeau was among those who organized the trip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said that in 2026, HERH\u2019s Europe trip will see them go to Greece while in 2027 they will visit Germany, Austria, Italy, Switzerland, and France.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ADVERTISEMENT:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;218&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;127&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Amsterdam, students were able to experience Dutch treats such as Stroopwafel and French Fries but also allowed them to see some wonderful sites such as the Flower Market, the Anne Frank House, Central Station, and the famous red-light district.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAbout half of the group chose an optional excursion to go for a three-hour bike ride through the Dutch countryside including a visit to an original windmill,\u201d said Comeau.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The tour continued to Belgium. In Brussels, students visited Atomium and the Mini-Europe Park, as well as visiting the Old city center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe group then continued on to Bruges, a beautiful canal city with stunning architecture and churches,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/IMG_3865-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-53464\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The six chaperones on the trip. (Submitted photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>During their two-and-a-half days in Belgium, students indulged in Belgian French fries, waffles, and chocolates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAlthough students enjoyed visiting the Belgian and French cities of Ypres, Lille &amp; Caen, the following five days were very much dedicated to honoring our lost heroes from WWI &amp; WWII. In Belgium, students visited Bergen-op-Zoom War Cemetery, attended the Last Post ceremony at Menin Gate, went through the underground tunnels and trenches at Passchendaele, visited the Flanders Museum in Ypres and visited the memorial to Lt. Col.
