{"id":54112,"date":"2025-05-06T21:40:14","date_gmt":"2025-05-07T00:40:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelaker.ca\/?p=54112"},"modified":"2025-05-06T21:40:14","modified_gmt":"2025-05-07T00:40:14","slug":"student-led-mmiwg2s-event-brings-awareness-about-red-dress-day-to-herh-students","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/?p=54112","title":{"rendered":"Student-led MMIWG2S event brings awareness about Red Dress Day to HERH students"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;111&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;78&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>By Paige Dillman, NSCC Journalism student who is interning with The Laker News for May<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>MILFORD:<\/strong> Two Indigenous students at Hants East Rural High School wanted to bring awareness to the National Day of Awareness and remembrance for the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and 2 Spirit people.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And on May 5, with the support of the school administration, they did just that to their fellow students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cadence Davidson and Camden Maloney, both grade 11 students at HERH, worked together to pull off this gathering, which simply started as a passion project.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They say that they were influenced to do something after seeing more news articles and videos about young missing and murdered girls.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt just really hit home because there is no voice to this, and there\u2019s no representation of this voice at Hants East Rural High, and so it was our moment to bring that voice forward,\u201d says Davidson.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/IMG_3881-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-54185\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Keigan Sack with Eastern Eagle drums and sings. (Healey photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ADVERTISEMENT:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;218&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;115&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>May 5 is known as Red Dress Day, which was inspired 15 years ago by Jamie Black, a Metis artist in Winnipeg.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jamie Black created an art installation where she displayed red dresses to represent MMIWG2S+.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;Davidson and Maloney have been working hard on this event for the last month. They were able to have a performance by the drum group Eastern Eagle and Jingle Dancer Shanda Nevin.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/IMG_3810-683x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-54184\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Jingle drum dancer Shanda Nevin on stage at HERH. (Healey photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00a0There was also a guest speaker, Dee-Ann Sack, who\u2019s a knowledge keeper and councillor from Sipekne\u2019katik.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As Sack did her talk, there was a slideshow that played, which showed the statistics of MMIWG2S+ and explained why this is an ongoing epidemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cadence made the slides, while Camden was her emotional and physical support throughout the research phase.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u00a0ADVERTISEMENT:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;190&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;87&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although this is a hard day of mourning and remembering, the girls shared that there is a way for everyone, even non-Indigenous people, to help.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cJust by being there and like supporting us and like showing that their there and hearing our stories and learning them,\u201d explained Maloney.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs well as trying to learn more about it and what they can do to help.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Both girls agreed that everyone should do their own research because this is a severe issue that everyone should educate themselves on.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;\u201cLook at the numbers, look at stories from your own communities because you might not think they\u2019re there, but they are,\u201d says Davidson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis is an epidemic across Canada, and it needs more voices now.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They hope that after the gathering, students go home and think about this, investigate it, and make it a topic of conversation.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/IMG_3767-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-54182\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Eastern Eagle drum group.
