{"id":55633,"date":"2025-05-16T14:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-05-16T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelaker.ca\/?p=54230"},"modified":"2025-05-16T14:00:00","modified_gmt":"2025-05-16T17:00:00","slug":"new-enhanced-sunshine-room-for-cancer-patients-opens-at-qeii","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/?p=55633","title":{"rendered":"New, enhanced Sunshine Room for cancer patients opens at QEII"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;238&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;105&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>By NSCC Journalism student Paige Dillman who is interning with The Laker News<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>HALIFAX:<\/strong> The QEII Foundation and Nova Scotia Health have collaborated to unveil a new and enhanced Sunshine Room.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Sunshine room is a calming space for cancer patients and family members to try to relax or have some quiet time.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sunshine Room Coordinator, Erin Fair, says that it\u2019s important for patients and families to have a place like this.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt is more than \u2018just a room\u2019: it is a place of comfort, of refuge, of community. It is a place where cancer patients can relax in between their treatments and appointments.\u201d Fair says.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ADVERTISEMENT:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;31&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;127&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the pandemic, Fair says, the room was converted into systemic therapy treatment pods, which at the time were highly needed.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also, the Sunshine Room is completely run by volunteers, and with no volunteers being permitted in the building during the pandemic, the room was not operational.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After five years, they decided there needed to be another room like this for cancer patients and families, so they joined with Nova Scotia Health to build a new one.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fair says this room offers things like massage therapy, Reiki or reflexology, given by licensed volunteers, along with wigs and wig fittings.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ADVERTISEMENT:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;71&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;237&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over time, they hope to add a book club, a knitting club and art therapy to the room.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The reason it took so long to reopen the room was that it took two years to secure a new and suitable location.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Sunshine Room is open Monday-Friday between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Donations to The Sunshine Room can be made at QE2Foundation.ca\/donate.
