Vanier Junior High students like Ashley Demings, Aliya Irving and their peers an \u201ceye-opening\u201d experience on the food products and farm markets in Nova Scotia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Demings and Irving were among the five students who helped cook and then serve food to fellow students during the food expo. There was also a room where research on various farm markets and food products that are available across the province were highlighted with information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think it&#8217;s just a great eye-opening thing for us students to see what kind of cool things and cool foods can be made in Nova Scotia,\u201d said Demings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the expo, students all got to try different food and gave others a chance to cook as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe also had to work together as a team to do this, the cooking,\u201d added Irving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/IMG_4984-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-54553\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The five students that did the cooking and serving at the Buy Local Food Expo at GPV. (Healey photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ADVERTISEMENT:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate group=&#8221;6&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;148&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/IMG_4907-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-54550\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">(Healey photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Demings said the food expo was not only great for the students educationally but also farmers as they supported them to purchase the food needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt just gives us students a little bit more of an idea of what kind of foods we can make locally,\u201d the Fall River area Grade 8 student said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The food expo allowed other students to be able to express themselves in ways they couldn\u2019t normally do so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI thought it was great because it gave me a chance to express my creativity and make posters,\u201d said Irving, who lives in Enfield, HRM.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI just thought it was something different because we don&#8217;t usually do this at our school. (Healey photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This was the first year for the Buy Local Food Expo at GPV and food nutrition teacher Andrea Gillespie is hopeful it will become an annual event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She explained there is an outcome in the curriculum, the food and nutrition curriculum, which covers local and global food issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe concept and importance of buying local goods is tied into that outcome,\u201d she said. \u201cWe received some funding, and the concept was using that money to put back into the economy by purchasing meats from Withrow\u2019s and vegetables from The Vegetorium.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The students served up beef stew; chicken soup; apple cheddar quesadillas; and blueberry muffins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gillespie said the students also had to work on a project focused on either a Nova Scotia food product or a local business that could have been a restaurant that specializes in Nova Scotia Foods or a market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s definitely a learning experience for them all,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/IMG_5002-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-54554\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Chicken soup was very popular. Ashley\u2019s having a fun time,\u201d she said. \u201cWe\u2019re all learning about food, using our skills, and working as a team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Irving and Demings both agreed the blueberry muffins were the most popular of the food items available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Journalism intern Paige Dillman asked Gillespie how the selection process went to determine which students would lead the expo and do the cooking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey were finishing up their projects, and they&#8217;re helpful and problem solving as students,\u201d Gillespie said. \u201cI said those are the ones that I need to be in the space that I can delegate a job to, and they just picked it up and rolled with it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI didn&#8217;t have to oversee them a whole lot.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/IMG_5044-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-54556\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Two students fill out their paper with info on the food market at the table they&#8217;re standing by during the food expo.
