{"id":55948,"date":"2025-06-11T14:30:00","date_gmt":"2025-06-11T17:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelaker.ca\/?p=55123"},"modified":"2025-06-11T14:30:00","modified_gmt":"2025-06-11T17:30:00","slug":"lockview-high-fownes-potter-named-athletes-of-the-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/?p=55948","title":{"rendered":"LOCKVIEW HIGH: Fownes, Potter named athletes of the year"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;218&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;115&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>F<strong>ALL RIVER:<\/strong> Students\u2019 successes were recognized in a celebration at Lockview High on Tuesday morning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Paityn Fownes and Tucker Potter were the big winners taking home the Male and Female Athlete of the Year honours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Luke Henneberry and Cate Gaudry were named senior scholar of the year winners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Those were among some of the major awards handed out, with others mentioned below in our story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a switch from a usual athletic awards banquet, Lockview High held an awards celebration during the school day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Besides athletic awards, the school said recognition for other student achievements and successes were recognized whether it was with the band, the musical, etc. These were dubbed the Miller awards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Award recipients were for extracurricular activities including Students Council, Band, Musical, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There were cupcakes and time for the recipients to socialize with one another and get their photos taken with their recognition and award.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ADVERTISEMENT:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;111&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate group=&#8221;8&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Potter, who calls Fletchers Lake home, played on the LHS football; rugby; baseball; and track and field teams as a Dragon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s pretty nice,\u201d said Potter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHopefully next year I can keep improving and play at the higher level and play at university someday\/\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fownes, from Windsor Junction, was excited to be the female athlete of the year winner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI was very surprised, but very happy and relieved,\u201d she said. \u201cJust proud I think.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She played jr. varsity soccer; cross country; varsity basketball; track and field; badminton; and slo-pitch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How did she manage to balance school with all the sports she participated in?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA calendar that\u2019s for sure,\u201d she said with a chuckle. \u201cA colour coded calendar and giving myself lots of notice and time when assignments were due.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt was all worth it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She couldn\u2019t summarize what it meant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s just crazy, it all means a lot to me,\u201d said Fownes. \u201cI\u2019m just very happy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ADVERTISEMENT:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;71&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;87&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/senior-scholar-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-55160\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Cate Gaudry and Luke Henneberry were the senior scholar winners. (Healey photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Henneberry said the award shows he kept his grades up while playing a lot of sports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt feels great to be the recipient,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gaudry, of Windsor Junction, echoed Henneberry\u2019s comments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s pretty cool to be the winner of the award,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt shows that I was able to keep my academic marks up while participating in sports here at Lockview.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ADVERTISEMENT:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;105&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[adrotate banner=&#8221;190&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other major award winners included:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/IMG_6384-683x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-55165\" style=\"width:513px;height:auto\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Max Brien and Grace Hilton as rookies of the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Oliver Hayward and Jorja MacDonald as Freshman Scholar Athlete of the Year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cole Howell and Sarah Walsh were named Sportsperson of the Year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The LHS Dragons boys golf team was named Team of the Year. The team is made up of \ufffcCole Stewart, Blake Wilson, Aidan Hibberts, and Luke MacDougall<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, the Dragons senior girls track, and field team was awarded the Outstanding Performance of the Year award.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The team consisted of Sophie Daigle; Anna Smith; Anna Carruthers; Cicely Harnum; Cate Gaudry; Reese Quist; Charlie Grant; and Ava MacKay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/IMG_6491-1024x975.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-55157\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Track and field.
