{"id":56409,"date":"2025-07-05T11:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-07-05T14:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelaker.ca\/?p=56409"},"modified":"2025-07-05T11:00:00","modified_gmt":"2025-07-05T14:00:00","slug":"researchers-at-st-f-x-partner-with-brewery-to-put-health-warning-labels-on-alcohol-products","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/?p=56409","title":{"rendered":"Researchers at St. F.X. partner with brewery to put health warning labels on alcohol products"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full has-lightbox\"><a href=\"\/www.thefinancialengineer.ca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\" noreferrer noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/steve-mac-new-ad-laker.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-55808\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full has-lightbox\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.journey2wellness.ca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\" noreferrer noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Laker-January-2025-Ad.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-55803\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><strong>ANTIGONISH:<\/strong> Dr. Kara Thompson, Research Chair in Substance Use Policy and Prevention at St. Francis Xavier University, and Director of the Victor and Mona Dahdaleh Institute for Innovation in Health, has partnered with Candid Brewing, a community-based craft brewery in Antigonish, Nova Scotia to pilot new health warning labels on alcohol products.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This initiative is the first of its kind in the province and represents an important step in translating research into action. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This project was funded by a New Frontiers in Research Fund Grant awarded to Dr. Thompson, which supports high-risk, high-reward interdisciplinary research.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ADVERTISEMENT:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full has-lightbox\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jerryandannettemurphy.ca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\" noreferrer noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/KW-Realty-Biz-card-300-x-200.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-55793\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full has-lightbox\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.junk-works.ca\/locations\/halifax\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\" noreferrer noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/JunkWorks-Inline-ad.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-55785\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>According to February 2025 polling by the Canadian Cancer Society, nearly&nbsp;half of Atlantic Canadians (49 per cent) remain unaware that alcohol increases the risk of cancer&nbsp;\u2014 highlighting a major gap in public awareness.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAlcohol is a serious public health issue, but its risks are still too often overlooked,\u201d said Dr. Thompson. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis partnership with Candid Brewing demonstrates how researchers and local businesses can work together to close information gaps and support healthier, more informed choices. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It\u2019s about transparency, trust, and giving people the knowledge they deserve.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Empowering Consumers \u2014 Not Restricted Drinking<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The research project responds to Canada\u2019s New Guidance on Alcohol and Health(2023), which emphasized the need for clearer labeling and public education on alcohol-related risks. Y<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>et despite strong national recommendations, most alcohol products in Canada still lack basic health disclosures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cConsumers deserve access to the same kind of health information for alcohol that they\u2019ve come to expect on other products. People have a right to know,\u201d stated Thompson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ADVERTISEMENT:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"alignnormal\">[metaslider id=&#8221;56179&#8243;]<\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full has-lightbox\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ninelocksbrewing.ca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\" noreferrer noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/BLONDE_780x250.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-54612\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Recent polling by the Canadian Cancer Societ<strong>y<\/strong>&nbsp;also shows strong public support for this kind of initiative:&nbsp;84 per cent of Atlantic Canadians support mandatory health and safety labeling on alcohol containers, exceeding the national average of 81 per cent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The labels&nbsp;will begin appearing on select Candid products in the coming weeks&nbsp;and include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The number of standard drinks per container<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Concise messaging about alcohol\u2019s connection to cancer<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Canada\u2019s new national guidance on alcohol and health<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cStandard drink labels play a particularly important role in helping consumers understand how much alcohol they are actually consuming,\u201d said Thompson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWithout clear and consistent labeling, it becomes easy to underestimate intake\u2014especially when drinks are served in non-standard portions or when alcohol content varies across products.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ADVERTISEMENT:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full has-lightbox\"><a href=\"https:\/\/themccooeyegroup.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\" noreferrer noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Don-M-ad-mini-header.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-55800\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full has-lightbox\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/brianwongmla\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\" noreferrer noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Brian-Wong-Advert-780-x-250.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-55784\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>The brewery is careful to clarify that this initiative is not about discouraging responsible drinking \u2014 rather, it\u2019s about respecting customers\u2019 right to know what they\u2019re consuming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe live in an age of overwhelming access to information. We stand behind the products that we make and are happy to present our customers with an accessible way to understand the current public health recommendations around alcohol consumption,&#8221; said Bryan Druhan, co-founder of Candid Brewing.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The research team will evaluate community responses to the label and assess the impact of the labels on alcohol sales, helping to shape future directions in alcohol policy and communication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A Local First \u2014 Leading a National Conversation<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This launch places StFX and Candid Brewing at the forefront of a growing national conversation about alcohol labeling and public health. This partnership highlights how small-scale, community-rooted actions can contribute to broader conversations around alcohol, risk, and transparency \u2014 both in Nova Scotia and across Canada,\u201d said Dr. Thompson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe believe small producers can be big leaders,\u201d added Druhan. \u201cIf our team can take this step, so can others.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A Timely Response to Changing Alcohol Policy in Nova Scotia<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This pilot also comes at a critical time in the province.
