{"id":56910,"date":"2025-07-16T08:15:00","date_gmt":"2025-07-16T11:15:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelaker.ca\/?p=56910"},"modified":"2025-07-16T08:15:00","modified_gmt":"2025-07-16T11:15:00","slug":"4-h-opens-door-to-opportunities-for-young-participants","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/?p=56910","title":{"rendered":"4-H opens door to opportunities for young participants"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"alignnormal\">[metaslider id=&#8221;56509&#8243;]<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>MILFORD:<\/strong> When Jillian Wood was a young girl, she went to the Halifax County Exhibition with her family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While attending the event, in Middle Musquodoboit, she would see members of local 4-H clubs presenting their projects or with animals that they would be judged on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s where Wood, an Enfield resident, decided she wanted to join a 4-H club and told her mom, and so that led her to join the Shu-Mil 4-H Club.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At Achievement Day on the Milford Rec grounds on July 14, Wood was one of almost 40 participants who were showing off their animals to a judge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On this day, while they were not being judged as each participant received a ribbon, it was more so they could learn what judges at regional and provincial exhibitions would look for and judge them on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wood said she joined 4-H to become more involved with Agriculture, and that has led to her being employed at two dairy farms as a result.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI always went to the exhibition as a kid and saw all the 4-H people and thought that would be really neat,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ADVERTISEMENT:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"alignnormal\">[metaslider id=&#8221;56526&#8243;]<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:34px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"alignnormal\">[metaslider id=&#8221;56560&#8243;]<\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/IMG_0788-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-56916\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">(Healey photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Wood started on little projects to get involved and that has led to where she is now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI got into dairy, and that got me a job and then it helped me later in life with school,\u201d said Wood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She\u2019s only working in dairy now, but when she was younger, she did crafts; foods; and goats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>4-H encompasses Life Skills such as sewing, Crafts, Photography, Heritage, Scrapbooking and Livestock projects such as Dairy, Beef, Light Horse, Sheep, Dog, Poultry and Goat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Elliott Nelson, from Shubenacadie, said her calf behaved appropriately which allowed her to have an enjoyable day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMy calf behaved so that made me really happy,\u201d she said. \u201cI went into the ring with a smile and came out with a smile, which I normally don\u2019t do so that was good for me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lillian McDonald thought her achievement Day went great. She got into 4-H to make new friends and learn new skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI like cows and working with them and just being around them,\u201d said McDonald, of Milford.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ADVERTISEMENT:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"alignnormal\">[metaslider id=&#8221;56514&#8243;]<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:34px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"alignnormal\">[metaslider id=&#8221;56191&#8243;]<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Wood pointed to the fun and new friendships one can make as a reason for anyone thinking about joining 4-H to do so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt opens a lot of opportunities,\u201d said Wood. \u2018You get to make friends, learn so much with life skills and being patient in life, and it helps in other ways like in school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt shows you other careers that are possible and that people do. It really helps with getting involved in that stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She recommends anyone thinking about joining to give 4-H a try.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt showed me a lot, and it made me get involved in a lot of other stuff,\u201d said Wood. \u201cIt broadened my horizon.
