The total value of the tax refund is $31 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe know Nova Scotians, particularly our seniors, feel the rising cost of living. Every extra dollar helps,\u201d said John Lohr, Minister of Finance and Treasury Board. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re happy to put that money back into their pockets, where it\u2019s needed most.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nova Scotian seniors who receive the federal Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) and pay provincial income tax are eligible for a refund of their provincial tax.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ADVERTISEMENT:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"alignnormal\">[metaslider id=&#8221;56526&#8243;]<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:36px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"alignnormal\">[metaslider id=&#8221;56376&#8243;]<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The number of eligible seniors has grown because of demographic changes. Seniors who work can earn more money and pay provincial income tax while still qualifying for the federal GIS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The province assesses eligibility and processes refunds based on tax returns. Seniors do not have to apply for this refund, but they must file a tax return every year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Those who did not file a return for the 2024 taxation year, but who are eligible, can still receive the refund when they file a tax return.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Quick Facts:<\/strong><br>&#8211; Nova Scotia introduced the GIS provincial income tax refund program in 2010<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; 96,000 Nova Scotia seniors received the GIS in 2024<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; the Province issues GIS tax refund payments twice per fiscal year, in August and January<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"alignnormal\">[metaslider id=&#8221;56530&#8243;]<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>HALIFAX: The province has mailed about 19,000 tax refunds to low-income seniors through a program offered only in Nova Scotia.
