{"id":58802,"date":"2025-09-25T00:30:47","date_gmt":"2025-09-25T03:30:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelaker.ca\/?p=58802"},"modified":"2025-09-25T00:30:47","modified_gmt":"2025-09-25T03:30:47","slug":"council-narrowly-votes-to-return-shubenacadie-cenotaph-to-original-location","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/?p=58802","title":{"rendered":"Council narrowly votes to return Shubenacadie cenotaph to original location"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"alignnormal\">[metaslider id=&#8221;56514&#8243;]<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>SHUBENACADIE: <\/strong>After months of emotional debate, East Hants councillors have narrowly voted to move the Shubenacadie cenotaph back to its original site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the Sept. 24 council meeting, councillors rejected a staff recommendation to relocate the monument to a new \u201cprominent site\u201d within the parking lot at an estimated cost of $40,000. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI made a motion last week that was to move the cenotaph back to its original spot,\u201d said Coun. Sandra Garden-Cole. \u201cWe were negligent in not consulting the public on this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe way to most directly make that right is by putting the cenotaph back where it was.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ADVERTISEMENT:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"alignnormal\">[metaslider id=&#8221;56376&#8243;]<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:35px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"alignnormal\">[metaslider id=&#8221;56526&#8243;]<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Coun. Keith Rhyno agreed, saying council had erred.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe thought we were doing the right thing at that time, because there was some confusion with regard to the Legion wanting it moved. We made a mistake,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen a wrong is done, admit it, apologize for it, and move on and try to correct that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Deputy Warden Carl McPhee also spoke at length, addressing criticism he has received over the matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI must say that I\u2019m rather disappointed with the characterization of myself as being despicable, a liar, arrogant, and disgusting,\u201d he told colleagues. \u201cI don\u2019t know the people even saying this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTo say that I disrespect the monument or their memory simply is so wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe important part are the names on the monument. I honour them, and always will.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ADVERTISEMENT:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"alignnormal\">[metaslider id=&#8221;56509&#8243;]<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Other councillors stressed the importance of hearing all voices in the community before making a permanent decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s been emails come in from both sides,\u201d said Coun. Michael Perry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSome of the messages were very sobering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe need open discourse, because if we don\u2019t, then we are dismissing the public that wrote in and said they like to leave it where it\u2019s at.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe residents of Shubenacadie should be given priority.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the end, a follow-up motion to leave the cenotaph at the Legion but add interpretive panels at the old site failed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ADVERTISEMENT:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"alignnormal\">[metaslider id=&#8221;56511&#8243;]<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead, by a 6\u20135 vote, council approved moving the cenotaph back to its original location. The gallery at council chambers erupted into applause at this news.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Councillors Norval Mitchell, Warden Eleanor Roulston, Deputy Warden MacPhee, Councillor Eldon Hebb, and Councillor Perry voted nay to the motion. All other councillors voted in agreement to the motion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Coun. Rhyno urged that the work be done quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf this motion does pass, I would like at all possible to have this back in place by November 11,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Staff confirmed they would try to meet that timeline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe will do everything we can at the staff level to do that,\u201d said Acting CAO Adam Clarkson. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere may need to be some minor repairs done to the base, but we hear the desire of council to have it back by Nov. 11.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Funding for the relocation will be determined at a later date, Warden Roulston said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"alignnormal\">[metaslider id=&#8221;56530&#8243;]<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>SHUBENACADIE: After months of emotional debate, East Hants councillors have narrowly voted to move the Shubenacadie cenotaph back to its original site.
