{"id":58822,"date":"2025-09-25T20:38:53","date_gmt":"2025-09-25T23:38:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelaker.ca\/?p=58822"},"modified":"2025-09-25T20:38:53","modified_gmt":"2025-09-25T23:38:53","slug":"ottawa-announces-major-reforms-to-canada-post-amid-financial-crisis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/?p=58822","title":{"rendered":"Ottawa announces major reforms to Canada Post amid financial crisis"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"alignnormal\">[metaslider id=&#8221;56506&#8243;]<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>OTTAWA:<\/strong> Canada Post is facing an \u201cexistential crisis,\u201d according to the federal government, which announced sweeping reforms Thursday aimed at stabilizing the crown corporation\u2019s finances and modernizing its operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cCanada Post is a national institution, older than our country itself, that has been serving Canadians for more than 150 years,\u201d said Jo\u00ebl Lightbound, Minister of Government Transformation, Public Works and Procurement. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cCanadians continue to rely on it today, and it remains a vital public service.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the minister acknowledged the corporation is effectively insolvent, losing roughly $10 million per day. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since 2018, it has accumulated more than $5 billion in losses. In 2024 alone, it lost over $1 billion, and is on track to lose close to $1.5 billion in 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ADVERTISEMENT:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"alignnormal\">[metaslider id=&#8221;56179&#8243;]<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:34px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"alignnormal\">[metaslider id=&#8221;56530&#8243;]<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>As a result of the government&#8217;s announcement, the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) issued the following as part of a statement on Thursday evening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;In response to the Government\u2019s attack on our postal service and workers, effective immediately, all CUPW members at Canada Post are on a nation-wide strike.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Earlier this year, Ottawa provided a $1-billion injection to keep Canada Post afloat. The second quarter of 2025 marked its worst results ever, with a $407-million loss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Letter mail volumes have plunged from 5.5 billion annually two decades ago to just 2 billion today, even as the number of addresses continues to grow. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, parcel delivery \u2014 once seen as the future of the postal service \u2014 has also declined. Canada Post\u2019s market share in parcels has dropped from 62 per cent in 2019 to below 24 per cent today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ADVERTISEMENT:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"alignnormal\">[metaslider id=&#8221;56526&#8243;]<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Lightbound announced several measures to address the challenges:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Letter mail delivery standards:<\/strong> Non-urgent mail will move by ground instead of air, saving $20 million annually.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Community mailbox conversions:<\/strong> The moratorium is lifted, allowing the conversion of 4 million remaining door-to-door addresses to community mailboxes. That move is expected to generate $400 million in savings each year.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Postal network modernization:<\/strong> The 1994 moratorium on closing rural post offices will be lifted.
