{"id":59143,"date":"2025-10-08T10:43:13","date_gmt":"2025-10-08T13:43:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelaker.ca\/?p=59143"},"modified":"2025-10-08T10:43:13","modified_gmt":"2025-10-08T13:43:13","slug":"amendments-clarify-code-of-conduct-for-elected-officials","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/?p=59143","title":{"rendered":"Amendments clarify Code of Conduct for elected officials"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"alignnormal\">[metaslider id=&#8221;56501&#8243;]<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>HALIFAX:<\/strong> Nova Scotia is making changes to the code of conduct for elected officials to address feedback from municipalities about the complaints and investigation process.<br><br>\u201cWe worked closely with our municipal partners to develop a code of conduct to provide elected officials with guidance on procedural standards and the level of professionalism expected of them,\u201d said John Lohr, Minister of Municipal Affairs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBased on the feedback received from municipalities, we\u2019re refining the language to enhance its clarity, reduce the administrative burden and protect against potential misuse.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ADVERTISEMENT:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"alignnormal\">[metaslider id=&#8221;56179&#8243;]<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><br>Amendments to the regulations clarify that<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; complaints may be made by a council member related to the conduct of another elected official in the same municipality<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; council members may not submit a complaint on behalf of another person or entity<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; multiple complaints may not be submitted by a council member on the same subject.<br><br>When multiple complaints have been received about the same subject, the investigator must consolidate the complaints into a single investigation, where appropriate.<br><br>The changes do not apply to complaints and investigations already in progress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ADVERTISEMENT:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"alignnormal\">[metaslider id=&#8221;56526&#8243;]<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><br>Now in effect, the changes will address the immediate needs of municipalities while discussions to strengthen and refine the administration of the code of conduct continue.<br><br>The province has committed to conducting a full review of the framework in 2027.<br><br><strong>Quotes:\u00a0<br><\/strong>\u201cThe code of conduct has been a welcome and important tool for municipalities.\u00a0As with all new things, we\u2019d expect to make some adjustments.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The changes will provide clarity and help our partners manage some unexpected outcomes.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We appreciate being able to work hand in hand with the province to ensure the code of conduct continues to meet the needs of Nova Scotia\u2019s municipalities.\u201d\u00a0<br>\u2014 <em>Pam Mood, Mayor, Town of Yarmouth;
