{"id":59624,"date":"2025-10-21T13:30:00","date_gmt":"2025-10-21T16:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelaker.ca\/?p=59624"},"modified":"2025-10-21T13:30:00","modified_gmt":"2025-10-21T16:30:00","slug":"sr-hockey-pens-storm-back-win-nsshl-season-opener","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/?p=59624","title":{"rendered":"Sr. Hockey: Pens storm back to win, spoil NSSHL home opener for Bearcats"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"alignnormal\">[metaslider id=&#8221;56560&#8243;]<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>TRURO:<\/strong> The East Hants Penguins opened their Nova Scotia Senior Hockey League (NSSHL) season with a statement comeback victory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Pens erased an early three-goal deficit to the Truro Bearcats to earn a 5\u20133 win before an enthusiastic crowd at Colchester Legion Stadium in Truro.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Goaltender Bryan Gillis was sharp between the pipes, stopping 25 of 28 shots, and credited his teammates\u2019 depth and determination for sparking the rally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe know that we\u2019re deep, and we have a lot of assets on our team,\u201d said Gillis. \u201cThe guys just kept pushing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe knew if we kept pressing, eventually we\u2019d get the results we wanted.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ADVERTISEMENT:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"alignnormal\">[metaslider id=&#8221;56511&#8243;]<\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/IMG_0696-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-59606\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">East Hants celebrates a goal. (Healey photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Andrew Shewfelt led the offensive charge for East Hants, scoring twice, while Regan Spears, Connor Baker, and Cam Pound added singles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Penguins\u2019 attack was balanced, with contributions spread throughout the lineup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Playmaker Jimmy Scullion had three assists, while Spears chipped in two helpers to go along with his goal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Zack Speck-Meek, Will Thompson, and Jordan Wentzell each added single assists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gillis said the comeback reflected the team\u2019s identity and early-season focus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI try to do what I can, but the guys played great in front of me,\u201d he said. \u201cThey battled hard, blocked shots, and didn\u2019t give up when it was 3\u20130.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt was a full team effort.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/IMG_0499-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-59600\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">(Healey photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/IMG_0541-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-59602\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">An East Hants Penguin gets a scoring opportunity.
