{"id":59867,"date":"2025-11-11T14:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-11-11T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelaker.ca\/?p=59867"},"modified":"2025-11-11T14:00:00","modified_gmt":"2025-11-11T18:00:00","slug":"food-banks-in-n-s-see-more-than-43000-visits-during-one-month-span","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/?p=59867","title":{"rendered":"Food banks in N.S see more than 43,000 visits during one month span"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"alignnormal\">[metaslider id=&#8221;56506&#8243;]<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>LOWER SACKVILLE\/EAST HANTS:<\/strong> Food banks across the country saw 2.2 million visits in the month of March, with those in Nova Scotia accounting for 43,421 of those visits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That number is according to the Food Banks Canada\u2019s HungerCount, a report on food bank usage across the country. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was released on Oct. 27 with findings that show the use in N.S. for one month increased 10.3 percent since 2024. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNova Scotians deserve better,\u201d said Ash Avery, executive director of Feed Nova Scotia. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur communities deserve to be able to live a secure and dignified life, and that type of future is only possible with immediate and targeted government intervention.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can read the entirety of the report here: <a href=\"https:\/\/foodbankscanada.ca\/hunger-in-canada\/hungercount\/?fbclid=IwZXh0bgNhZW0CMTAAYnJpZBExampjbkFWWnBzYWJiMktDYgEeDvgpooElRZ_akYOWTPScboUhda27ACob_CFB7xqul8jq5wEmKBi3FyaYXpM_aem_YhZirUm3Vxu2zdNAdg5fTA\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">https:\/\/foodbankscanada.ca\/hunger-in-canada\/hungercount\/<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ADVERTISEMENT:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"alignnormal\">[metaslider id=&#8221;56376&#8243;]<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"alignnormal\">[metaslider id=&#8221;56514&#8243;]<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>This year\u2019s statistics showed that 24% of Nova Scotian food bank clients are employed, the highest amount on record, with another 40% relying on inadequate and outdated social supports. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Almost half of all Nova Scotians who accessed food banks over the past year cited cost of food as the main reason for using a food bank, with another third stating the cost of housing and utilities as the reason for seeking support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWith social assistance rates being lower than the poverty line, it\u2019s no wonder that our neighbours have no choice but to turn to food support,\u201d said Avery. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThese numbers show that income and social assistance rates in Nova Scotia continue to fall far below the cost of living.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ADVERTISEMENT:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"alignnormal\">[metaslider id=&#8221;56526&#8243;]<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"alignnormal\">[metaslider id=&#8221;56179&#8243;]<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Feed Nova Scotia is calling on provincial and federal governments to take urgent action to address poverty and inadequate income. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The organization is asking for the provincial government to focus on immediate improvements to income assistance and tax credit programs, as well as the implementation of a basic income guarantee program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Feed Nova Scotia is also calling on the federal government to repair Canada\u2019s outdated social safety net: to modernize the Employment Insurance (EI) system by expanding support for precarious, gig, and self-employed workers, and to enhance the Canada Workers Benefit (CWB) and the Canada Disability Benefit (CDB).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cCharity is not the solution. More food will not solve food insecurity,&#8221; Avery said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;We do not want to be back here next year with similar statistics.
