{"id":59993,"date":"2025-11-02T16:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-11-02T20:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelaker.ca\/?p=59993"},"modified":"2025-11-02T16:00:00","modified_gmt":"2025-11-02T20:00:00","slug":"ministers-statement-on-supreme-court-of-canada-decision","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/?p=59993","title":{"rendered":"Minister\u2019s\u00a0statement\u00a0on Supreme Court of Canada decision"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"alignnormal\">[metaslider id=&#8221;56514&#8243;]<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>HALIFAX:<\/strong> The following is a\u00a0statement\u00a0from\u00a0Scott Armstrong, Attorney General and\u00a0Minister\u00a0of Justice, in response to the Supreme Court of Canada\u2019s decision striking down mandatory minimum sentences for child pornography offences on Friday, Oct. 31.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Friday\u2019s\u00a0decision by the Supreme Court of Canada to strike down mandatory minimum sentences for those convicted of child\u00a0pornography offences is\u00a0deeply troubling. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Nova Scotians should be able to expect\u00a0that sentences for those who commit horrible crimes will protect the public, and not leave victims feeling more vulnerable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Child pornography offences\u00a0are not abstract or victimless.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ADVERTISEMENT:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"alignnormal\">[metaslider id=&#8221;56526&#8243;]<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"alignnormal\">[metaslider id=&#8221;56501&#8243;]<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;As a former school principal, I have seen first-hand the devastating harm that sexual exploitation of children can cause. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;These crimes cause deep and lasting harm to individuals, families, and communities both here at home and around the world.
