{"id":60112,"date":"2025-11-08T11:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-11-08T15:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelaker.ca\/?p=60112"},"modified":"2025-11-08T11:00:00","modified_gmt":"2025-11-08T15:00:00","slug":"rally-to-stand-up-against-provinces-attacks-on-treaty-rights-environmental-safeguards-planned-for-nov-15","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/?p=60112","title":{"rendered":"Rally to stand up against province&#8217;s attacks on Treaty Rights, environmental safeguards planned for Nov. 15"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"alignnormal\">[metaslider id=&#8221;56506&#8243;]<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>HALIFAX:<\/strong> A coalition of Mi\u2019kmaw and settler groups and communities from across Nova Scotia are gathering at the Halifax Commons on Nov. 15 at 12 p.m. to call on the Houston government to respect Mi\u2019kmaw Rights, follow democratic processes and stop selling off Nova Scotia to corporate interests. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Led by Mi\u2019kmaw Rights Holders and in solidarity with land defenders at Tqamuoweye\u2019katik \/ Hunter\u2019s Mountain, organizers are inviting all concerned citizens to join them in demanding accountability from the Nova Scotia government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf you live, work, play or pray in Nova Scotia, we want you there,\u201d say Mi\u2019kmaw land defenders Michelle Paul and Glenda Junta. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re standing in solidarity with all resistance movements in Nova Scotia. We want to hear your voices.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ADVERTISEMENT:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"alignnormal\">[metaslider id=&#8221;56530&#8243;]<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"alignnormal\">[metaslider id=&#8221;56179&#8243;]<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The Shoulder to Shoulder Rally comes out of a groundswell of frustration and public outcry from all corners of the province. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since January 2025, the Houston government has made numerous controversial changes to provincial legislation and governance, including the lifting of bans on uranium mining and fracking, consolidating power over municipal development, a willingness to allow private development in protected areas, and changes to the Crown Lands Act that experts warn could infringe on Mi\u2019kmaw Treaty Rights and criminalize legal protest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite this growing unrest, organizers say their message is one of unity and hope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe can build a better future for our communities,\u201d says Nina Newington, president of Save Our Old Forests (SOOF). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;\u201cBut only if we work together. Houston\u2019s arrogant disrespect for Treaty Rights and democracy, his attempts to reverse the progress we have made &#8211; all this has brought us together, Mi\u2019kmaq and settlers, city dwellers and rural people.
