Health expanding AI-powered detection system after successful pilot"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"alignnormal\">[metaslider id=&#8221;56501&#8243;]<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>TRURO:<\/strong> Nova Scotia Health is moving forward with a phased provincial rollout of an artificial intelligence (AI)-powered weapons detection system following a successful pilot at Colchester East Hants Health Centre (CEHHC) in Truro.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The system enhances safety for patients,&nbsp;visitors&nbsp;and healthcare providers while&nbsp;maintaining&nbsp;a welcoming environment in emergency departments.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More than 7,400 people were screened during\u00a0the\u00a0two-week pilot. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Approximately 49 potentially dangerous items were intercepted, with\u00a0additional\u00a0individuals returning items to their vehicles before entering\u00a0the hospital.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The technology\u00a0demonstrated\u00a0significant operational advantages, such as\u00a0reducing the number of secondary searches by about 25 per cent compared to conventional screening methods like metal detectors, while also improving screening times. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ADVERTISEMENT:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"alignnormal\">[metaslider id=&#8221;56526&#8243;]<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"alignnormal\">[metaslider id=&#8221;56376&#8243;]<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The system&#8217;s ability to distinguish between everyday personal items and actual weapons helped streamline entry\u00a0and\u00a0minimize delays.\u00a0Public\u00a0response was overwhelmingly positive.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis technology is helping us create a safer, more secure healthcare environment for everyone who walks through our doors,\u201d said Dean\u00a0Stienburg, director of security for Nova Scotia Health. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re proud to lead the way with this innovative approach and appreciate the support we\u2019ve received from patients, staff and the public.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nova Scotia Health plans to install AI-powered units\u00a0at up to 12 sites\u00a0across the province over\u00a0the coming months\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0from Cape Breton to Yarmouth. These units will be prioritized for emergency department entrances, with the rollout expected to be completed in the next six months.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Further expansion beyond this phase will be considered based on continued evaluation.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first new\u00a0systems\u00a0will be\u00a0in\u00a0place\u00a0at the QEII\u2019s Halifax Infirmary site\u00a0and at\u00a0Dartmouth General Hospital\u00a0as of\u00a0Dec.\u00a013. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Installation at remaining sites will\u00a0begin in January.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ADVERTISEMENT:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"alignnormal\">[metaslider id=&#8221;56506&#8243;]<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The pilot was supported through the $7-million Safety Innovation Fund, a collaborative initiative between the Province of Nova Scotia and the Nova Scotia Council of Nursing Unions to address workplace safety concerns and reduce violence in healthcare settings.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Janet Hazelton,&nbsp;chair&nbsp;of the Nova Scotia Council of Nursing Unions, said she is pleased the pilot was a success and that the program is going ahead in other areas of the province.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe safety and security of nurses, patients\u00a0and others\u00a0continues\u00a0to be a high priority for the nurses\u2019 union,&#8221; said Hazelton, president of the Nurses Union. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Using proven technology to reduce the risk of harm and violence in our workplaces is a worthwhile investment.
