{"id":60821,"date":"2025-12-05T12:36:57","date_gmt":"2025-12-05T16:36:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelaker.ca\/?p=60821"},"modified":"2025-12-05T12:36:57","modified_gmt":"2025-12-05T16:36:57","slug":"sipeknekatik-responds-to-n-s-government-on-illegal-cannabis-sales","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/?p=60821","title":{"rendered":"Sipekne&#8217;katik responds to N.S. government on illegal cannabis sales"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"alignnormal\">[metaslider id=&#8221;56506&#8243;]<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>INDIAN BROOK:<\/strong> Sipekne\u2019katik Chief and Council are appalled by the direct threat to our community&#8217;s safety caused by the provincial government&#8217;s forceful directive to the RCMP to \u201cenhance the enforcement of illegal cannabis dispensaries, including on-reserve dispensaries,\u201d as it is considered a top public safety priority by Nova Scotians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chief Glasgow states, \u201cThe Nova Scotia government and its L\u2019nu Affairs Department does not govern our community, nor does it dictate what our community policing priorities are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Using public safety as a reason to override our inherent rights to self-govern and implement our treaty in a modern economic context is appalling.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She adds, \u201cThese are abuses of colonial power, and the Government of Nova Scotia and the police agencies need to focus their policing efforts to combat the illicit drugs &#8211; fentanyl and opioids that are being brought into our communities and leaving devastating effects on our families.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ADVERTISEMENT:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"alignnormal\">[metaslider id=&#8221;56509&#8243;]<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Chief Michelle also states, \u201cThe province&#8217;s actions through the Minister of Justice are acts of systemic racism and inciting hate against Mi\u2019kmaw people, labelling us the problem, and this narrative is absolutely disgusting.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The unilateral enforcement efforts interfere with Sipekne\u2019katik\u2019s inherent right to self-governance, including our authority to regulate economic activities for our Nation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Imposing provincial regulatory frameworks without meaningful consultation or agreement breaches our treaty rights, our constitutional protections, and the Crown\u2019s duty to consult and accommodate. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It is also inconsistent with commitments made under UNDRIP, which both Canada and Nova Scotia have publicly endorsed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ADVERTISEMENT:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"alignnormal\">[metaslider id=&#8221;56376&#8243;]<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition, \u201cThe abusive colonial power to direct police raids in our community is an action that continues to perpetuate harm and incite trauma to our community.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chief Glasgow concludes, \u201cI stand in solidarity with my fellow Mi\u2019kmaw Chiefs who stated, we hold Aboriginal Title, Aboriginal Rights, and Treaty Rights over our territory in Mi\u2019kma\u2019ki. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We possess the inherent right of self-governance. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;This jurisdiction protects our autonomy and our identity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chief Michelle Glasgow<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"alignnormal\">[metaslider id=&#8221;56501&#8243;]<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>INDIAN BROOK: Sipekne\u2019katik Chief and Council are appalled by the direct threat to our community&#8217;s safety caused by the provincial government&#8217;s forceful directive to the RCMP to \u201cenhance the enforcement of illegal cannabis dispensaries, including on-reserve dispensaries,\u201d as it is considered a top public safety priority by Nova Scotians.
