{"id":61200,"date":"2025-12-18T21:30:00","date_gmt":"2025-12-19T01:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelaker.ca\/?p=61200"},"modified":"2025-12-18T21:30:00","modified_gmt":"2025-12-19T01:30:00","slug":"3-6m-flood-mitigation-project-to-protect-highway-2-in-fall-river","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/?p=61200","title":{"rendered":"$3.6M flood mitigation project to protect Highway 2 in Fall River"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"alignnormal\">[metaslider id=&#8221;56501&#8243;]<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>FALL RIVER:<\/strong> Highway 2 will see significant flood protection improvements following a $3.6 million investment from the federal government and the Halifax Regional Municipality aimed at reducing the risk of damage from increasingly frequent heavy rainfall events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The funding targets three flood-prone sections of Highway 2:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>from Holland Road to Howe Avenue,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>from Coach Avenue to civic address #3476 Highway 2, and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>from Fall River Road to Miller Lane.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Heavy precipitation has routinely caused flooding in these areas, impacting private properties, residences, and the highway corridor itself. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The project will focus on increasing the capacity of the existing drainage system to better manage stormwater during extreme weather.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ADVERTISEMENT:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"alignnormal\">[metaslider id=&#8221;56530&#8243;]<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"alignnormal\">[metaslider id=&#8221;56376&#8243;]<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Planned upgrades include widening culverts, improving drainage systems, and strengthening roadside protections, all designed to accommodate higher stormwater flows and reduce flood risk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Funding for the project includes $1.4 million from the federal government and $2.2 million from Halifax Regional Municipality, supported through the federal Disaster Mitigation and Adaptation Fund.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking with <em>The Laker News<\/em> during an interview on Dec. 18 in Fall River, MP Braedon Clark (Sackville\u2013Bedford\u2013Preston) said the investment is a necessary response to changing climate conditions and long-standing community concerns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cExtreme weather events cause damage to both private property and public infrastructure alike,\u201d Clark said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe federal government is committed to funding projects like this one in Fall River that will ensure people\u2019s homes and our roads and highways are better protected against flooding from heavy rainfalls, which are getting worse and more frequent.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ADVERTISEMENT:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"alignnormal\">[metaslider id=&#8221;56526&#8243;]<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Clark said the goal is to address flooding proactively, rather than responding after damage has already occurred.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cUpgrading stormwater infrastructure \u2014 widening culverts, improving drainage, and adding protection along roadsides \u2014 helps protect private homes and businesses from flooding, which unfortunately is becoming more common,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While tendering and construction timelines have not yet been finalized, Clark said the investment will help reduce long-term costs and stress for residents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c$1.4 million is a lot of money,\u201d he said, \u201cbut it\u2019s far less than the cost of repairing or replacing infrastructure after it\u2019s been washed away.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Clark also pointed to the importance of cooperation between different levels of government in moving large infrastructure projects forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen we\u2019re all rowing in the same direction, we can actually get things done,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ADVERTISEMENT:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"alignnormal\">[metaslider id=&#8221;56179&#8243;]<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Beyond the physical upgrades, Clark said the funding offers reassurance to residents who live with the ongoing risk of flooding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen you live in an area where flooding is a real possibility, there\u2019s always that low-level anxiety in the back of your mind,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis investment helps give people peace of mind, knowing governments are responding to a serious issue.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"alignnormal\">[metaslider id=&#8221;56506&#8243;]<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>FALL RIVER: Highway 2 will see significant flood protection improvements following a $3.6 million investment from the federal government and the Halifax Regional Municipality aimed at reducing the risk of damage from increasingly frequent heavy rainfall events.
