{"id":61220,"date":"2025-12-20T10:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-12-20T14:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelaker.ca\/?p=61220"},"modified":"2025-12-20T10:00:00","modified_gmt":"2025-12-20T14:00:00","slug":"provincial-partnership-key-to-expanding-transit-in-fall-river-hrm-mayor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/?p=61220","title":{"rendered":"Provincial partnership key to expanding transit in Fall River: HRM Mayor"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"alignnormal\">[metaslider id=&#8221;56530&#8243;]<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>FALL RIVER:<\/strong> Mayor Andy Fillmore said expanding transit service deeper into Fall River remains a priority but will require continued growth in ridership and stronger involvement from the province.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking with <em>The Laker News<\/em> on Dec. 19 during an interview at Halifax City Hall, Fillmore acknowledged ongoing frustration from Fall River residents and businesses who want bus service extended along Highway 2 into the community, rather than stopping at the top of Perrin Drive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis is a conversation I\u2019ve had many times with Halifax Transit,\u201d Fillmore said. \u201cThere seem to be a number of reasons given why the transit you\u2019re describing is not happening.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ADVERTISEMENT:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"alignnormal\">[metaslider id=&#8221;56179&#8243;]<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>He said continued population growth in the community could help strengthen the case for expanded service, noting that increased ridership on potential future routes would make transit extensions more viable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs the municipality continues to grow and more riders emerge on these future potential routes, that\u2019s going to help make the case,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fillmore added that provincial involvement could be a key factor in accelerating transit improvements for Fall River.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He pointed to the Joint Regional Transportation Agency and the Capital Region Transportation Plan released earlier this year as important tools in addressing regional transportation gaps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think one thing that could really help to accelerate this solution is the provincial involvement,\u201d Fillmore said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe provincial government is very interested in looking at about a 50-kilometre radius around the city and doing whatever they can to make transit and transportation work better.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ADVERTISEMENT:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"alignnormal\">[metaslider id=&#8221;56501&#8243;]<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"alignnormal\">[metaslider id=&#8221;56526&#8243;]<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>He said improved regional transit is about more than buses alone, emphasizing the need to support commuters, businesses and economic growth across the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s commuters, that\u2019s moving goods and services \u2014 that keeps the economy going,\u201d Fillmore said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s moving private automobiles, bicycles, scooters \u2014 it\u2019s moving everything.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"alignnormal\">[metaslider id=&#8221;56560&#8243;]<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>FALL RIVER: Mayor Andy Fillmore said expanding transit service deeper into Fall River remains a priority but will require continued growth in ridership and stronger involvement from the province.
