said Uber Canada&#8217;s Keerthana Rang.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Under the proposal, every rideshare driver would need to visit City Hall and pay $135 in new fees, complete duplicative training, and pass an exam in order to keep driving \u2014 despite already meeting rigorous standards under Halifax\u2019s existing transportation network company (TNC) framework. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;They would have to pay an additional $100 every two years after that.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ADVERTISEMENT:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"alignnormal\">[metaslider id=&#8221;56179&#8243;]<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Halifax already has one of the strongest rideshare frameworks in Canada. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Drivers are already licensed through their platform, have completed the same background checks as taxi drivers, and paid for vehicle inspections \u2014 steps that go beyond what most Canadian cities require and already provide transparency and safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Adding new rules to a system that already works would only create unnecessary red tape for drivers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These duplicative requirements would:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Increase costs and slow onboarding for drivers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Make rides less reliable and more expensive for riders<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Add administrative burden to HRM staff<br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ADVERTISEMENT:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"alignnormal\">[metaslider id=&#8221;56530&#8243;]<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Rideshare and taxis operate under different models.<strong> <\/strong>Rideshare platforms already provide built-in digital safety features \u2014 such as GPS tracking, RideCheck, trip sharing, PIN verification, and real-time ID checks \u2014 that ensure accountability and safety without additional bureaucracy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>HRM\u2019s bylaws reflect this, with additional requirements on TNCs such as a prohibition on street hailing, app-based payments, and in-app information displayed to the rider. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>None of these municipal requirements apply to the taxi sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Uber is urging Council to maintain the existing, effective framework that protects safety, ensures driver accountability, and minimizes unnecessary red tape. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It is unfortunate that Staff\u2019s report\u2014in particular their jurisdictional scan\u2014is inaccurate and incomplete, yet forms the basis for much of the recommendation to make this significant licensing change,&#8221;
