{"id":61793,"date":"2026-01-20T23:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-01-21T03:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelaker.ca\/?p=61793"},"modified":"2026-01-20T23:00:00","modified_gmt":"2026-01-21T03:00:00","slug":"care-community-crisis-service-moves-to-24-7-support","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/?p=61793","title":{"rendered":"CARE\u00a0community crisis service\u00a0moves to\u00a024-7\u00a0support"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"alignnormal\">[metaslider id=&#8221;56506&#8243;]<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>DARTMOUTH\/COLE HARBOUR: <\/strong>Beginning\u00a0Jan. 19, residents in Dartmouth\u00a0(within\u00a0the\u00a0Highway 111\u00a0boundary), Woodlawn and Cole Harbour will have\u00a024-7\u00a0access to\u00a0the\u00a0community service called\u00a0CARE \u2013 Crisis Assistance and Response<strong>.\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Launched in October 2025,\u00a0the\u00a0CARE\u00a0program was\u00a0initially\u00a0offered between 8 a.m. and 9 p.m., Monday to Friday. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>CARE\u00a0is a pilot program that provides in-person support for people 16\u00a0years\u00a0and older experiencing non-emergency, non-violent\u00a0crises\u00a0related to mental health, substance use and personal well-being. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The service offers a safe, trauma-informed alternative to calling police or other first responders when they\u00a0may not be the best fit.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ADVERTISEMENT:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"alignnormal\">[metaslider id=&#8221;56179&#8243;]<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>About CARE<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Provides in-person help when someone is in distress.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Offers supports,\u00a0such as:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>calming and de-escalating a crisis\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>making a safety plan\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>helping someone get to a safe place\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>connecting people to community supports after the crisis\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>CARE staff are specially trained in trauma-informed care, harm reduction, mental health first aid, suicide\u00a0prevention\u00a0and cultural humility. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They are prepared to respond respectfully and effectively to people from diverse communities, including African Nova Scotians, Indigenous Peoples, 2SLGBTQIA+ and neurodiverse residents.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ADVERTISEMENT:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"alignnormal\">[metaslider id=&#8221;56501&#8243;]<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Implementation and partnerships<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Implementation of the CARE Team is a direct deliverable of the Regional Council-approved&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.halifax.ca\/about-halifax\/regional-community-planning\/public-safety\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Public Safety Strategy<\/a>. It fulfills&nbsp;the need for community-based, trauma-informed support that is community-led.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The CARE Team pilot program is delivered through partnership with:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>211<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Nova Scotia<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 first point of contact and call assessment\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Souls Harbour Rescue Mission<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 provides the\u00a0in-person support\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Municipal Community Safety team<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 oversees the program,\u00a0evaluation\u00a0and coordination\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How to access CARE<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Call 211.<\/strong>&nbsp;A trained navigator will assess the situation and, if it qualifies for CARE, dispatch&nbsp;the&nbsp;CARE&nbsp;mobile&nbsp;team.&nbsp;The CARE Mobile Team will then come in-person to provide support.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Important:<\/strong>&nbsp;CARE is a consent-based service. It does not respond to emergencies involving violence or weapons.
