{"id":61817,"date":"2026-01-22T21:43:19","date_gmt":"2026-01-23T01:43:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelaker.ca\/?p=61817"},"modified":"2026-01-22T21:43:19","modified_gmt":"2026-01-23T01:43:19","slug":"a-psa-from-halifax-water-on-preparing-for-cold-temperatures","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/?p=61817","title":{"rendered":"A PSA from Halifax Water on preparing for cold temperatures"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"alignnormal\">[metaslider id=&#8221;56506&#8243;]<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>NOVA SCOTIA:<\/strong> As a precaution, Halifax Water would like to remind customers that freezing temperatures can cause issues with internal plumbing and the privately-owned section of the water service lateral; which can result in a loss of water service.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To help avoid this, it is recommended that customers ensure there is a <strong>safe heat source<\/strong> in the area where your water service lateral enters your home &#8211; usually in a basement or utility closet near your water meter.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What to do if you lose water service during extreme cold?<\/strong><strong><br><\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Check the Halifax Water website (<a href=\"https:\/\/halifaxwater.ca\/notices-and-news\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">halifaxwater.ca\/notices<\/a>) for a known water service outage in your area.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; If your water has stopped flowing, and you are not impacted by a known service outage in your area:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>a.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Please contact our 24\/7 emergency line at 902-420-9287.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>b.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; We recommend that you close the water shut-off valve controlling water flow inside your home. This can help minimize the risk of flooding from frozen, cracked, or split plumbing caused by freezing temperatures.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ADVERTISEMENT:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"alignnormal\">[metaslider id=&#8221;56179&#8243;]<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"alignnormal\">[metaslider id=&#8221;56501&#8243;]<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Where is the water shut-off valve?<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As illustrated in the picture below, the valve can usually be found at the point the water line enters your home, between the entry point and the water meter. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If your shut-off valve does not work, contact a plumber.
