{"id":61997,"date":"2026-01-30T21:33:00","date_gmt":"2026-01-31T01:33:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelaker.ca\/?p=61997"},"modified":"2026-01-30T21:33:00","modified_gmt":"2026-01-31T01:33:00","slug":"nova-scotia-powers-grid-scale-battery-site-in-waverley-now-operational","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/?p=61997","title":{"rendered":"Nova Scotia Power&#8217;s grid-scale battery site in Waverley now operational"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"alignnormal\">[metaslider id=&#8221;56506&#8243;]<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>WAVERLEY:<\/strong> Nova Scotia Power\u2019s grid scale battery facilities in Bridgewater and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=rZLI3DjYSwU\">Waverley<\/a>, located in Spider Lake, are now in\u00a0operation after being energized in late 2025 and completing system testing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These sites strengthen reliability\u00a0for customers by supporting the grid during periods of high demand and variable conditions, while also\u00a0helping the province add more renewable energy over time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The facilities are part of Nova Scotia Power\u2019s Grid-Scale Battery Project, the largest battery installation in\u00a0Atlantic Canada, which includes three 50 MW\/4-hour battery installations in three communities across the\u00a0province\u2014Bridgewater, Waverley, and White Rock. They represent a total investment of $237\u00a0million. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Approved by the Nova Scotia Energy Board, this project will help improve reliability of power service\u00a0for customers and help the province achieve its goal of 80% renewable energy by 2030.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ADVERTISEMENT:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"alignnormal\">[metaslider id=&#8221;56179&#8243;]<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The two systems are already delivering value for customers, having been used as reliable backup power&nbsp;sources during periods of high peak demand throughout the cold snaps the province experienced this past weekend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThese battery sites allow us to store renewable energy and deliver it when customers need it most,\u00a0ensuring reliability as more renewables are added to the grid,\u201d said Dave Pickles, Chief Operating Officer at\u00a0Nova Scotia Power. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThanks to innovative partnerships and investment arrangements, we\u2019ve been able to\u00a0help mitigate cost impacts for customers while advancing this critical project.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The project was made possible through strong partnerships and innovative financing arrangements,\u00a0including a $138.2 million loan from the Canada Infrastructure Bank (CIB). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A portion of this investment\u00a0financed 90% of the Indigenous equity participation, enabling Wskijinu&#8217;k Mtmo&#8217;taqnuow Agency Ltd.\u00a0(WMA)\u2014an economic limited partnership owned by all 13 Mi\u2019kmaw communities in Nova Scotia\u2014to take\u00a0part in the project. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additional support of approximately $117 million was provided by Natural Resources\u00a0Canada through its Smart Renewable Energy and Electrification Pathways Program and Electricity\u00a0Predevelopment Program, representing roughly one third of total project costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWMA is proud to participate in the transition toward clean energy solutions for Nova Scotia,\u201d said Crystal\u00a0Nicholas, President at Wskijinu&#8217;k Mtmo&#8217;taqnuow Agency Ltd. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cInvesting in battery storage will produce\u00a0economic benefits as well as energy resiliency for Mi\u2019kmaw communities in the province, and we appreciate\u00a0the support and partnership of CIB and Nova Scotia Power in bringing our voices to this important project.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ADVERTISEMENT:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"alignnormal\">[metaslider id=&#8221;56530&#8243;]<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cProjects like this are especially meaningful for the CIB because they enable more diverse sources of clean\u00a0electricity to be integrated into Nova Scotia\u2019s grid, while also creating opportunities for Indigenous\u00a0communities to participate as ownership partners,\u201d said Ehren Cory, CIB Chief Executive Officer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis\u00a0energy storage initiative will deliver real benefits to Nova Scotians and generate lasting economic value for\u00a0both Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Construction on the two sites began in late 2024, and with Bridgewater and Waverley now operational.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The third site in White Rock is expected to come online in August 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"alignnormal\">[metaslider id=&#8221;56501&#8243;]<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>WAVERLEY: Nova Scotia Power\u2019s grid scale battery facilities in Bridgewater and Waverley, located in Spider Lake, are now in\u00a0operation after being energized in late 2025 and completing system testing.
