{"id":62006,"date":"2026-01-31T08:30:00","date_gmt":"2026-01-31T12:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelaker.ca\/?p=62006"},"modified":"2026-01-31T08:30:00","modified_gmt":"2026-01-31T12:30:00","slug":"electoral-boundaries-commission-releases-final-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/?p=62006","title":{"rendered":"Electoral Boundaries Commission releases final report"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"alignnormal\">[metaslider id=&#8221;56506&#8243;]<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>CHETICAMP:<\/strong> Nova Scotia\u2019s independent 2025 Electoral Boundaries Commission released its final report today, January 30, in both French and English.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Commission members were appointed in April 2025 by an all-party select committee of the House of Assembly for the purpose of recommending electoral boundaries to provide effective representation of the Acadian region of Ch\u00e9ticamp and area. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The select committee also provided the commission with terms of reference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The last review of the province\u2019s electoral boundaries took place in 2018-19. Reviews normally take place at least every 10 years. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This review, however, was conducted as a result of an order by the Supreme Court of Nova Scotia, which ruled that the previous commission\u2019s decision not to create an exceptional electoral district for Ch\u00e9ticamp violated Section 3 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ADVERTISEMENT:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"alignnormal\">[metaslider id=&#8221;56526&#8243;]<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>In its interim report, submitted in August 2025 after public consultation, the commission presented three alternatives: keeping the status quo, with 55 electoral districts, and two other proposed scenarios, each with 56 electoral districts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the final report, the commission\u2019s terms of reference mandated that only one set of boundaries be recommended.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After deliberations following a second round of public consultation, the commission is unanimously recommending a House of Assembly of 56 seats. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The current district of Inverness would be divided into two new electoral districts: Ch\u00e9ticamp-Margarees-Pleasant Bay and Inverness-We\u2019koqma\u2019q.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ADVERTISEMENT:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"alignnormal\">[metaslider id=&#8221;56179&#8243;]<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Commission Chair Kenneth Deveau thanks everyone who contributed oral and written comments during the two rounds of public consultation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt was a difficult job, but it was a pleasure working with this commission of dedicated members,\u201d Mr. Deveau said. \u201cThere were very helpful and passionate contributions from the public in all the communities we heard from. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;As our mandate draws to a close, I \u2013 and I am sure I speak on behalf of all commission members \u2013 am honoured to have been chosen and to have had the opportunity to serve my province through this process.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The commission\u2019s work is now complete.
