{"id":62043,"date":"2026-01-30T22:30:00","date_gmt":"2026-01-31T02:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelaker.ca\/?p=62043"},"modified":"2026-01-30T22:30:00","modified_gmt":"2026-01-31T02:30:00","slug":"powerful-step-forward-solar-project-gives-sackville-arena-a-bright-future-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/?p=62043","title":{"rendered":"Powerful step forward: Solar project gives Sackville Arena a bright future"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"alignnormal\">[metaslider id=&#8221;56501&#8243;]<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>LOWER SACKVILLE:<\/strong> A major federal investment announced Friday evening is set to give the Sackville Arena a new lease on life, while saving thousands of dollars every month and strengthening its role as a community hub.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sackville\u2013Bedford\u2013Preston MP Braedon Clark announced $1.3 million in federal funding from a green energy grant for the installation of solar panels on the roof of the Sackville Arena.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The announcement was made on the ice with Clark and members of the LDRA there as well just ahead of the opening games of the second annual Bill Chase Cup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The funding, delivered through the Green and Inclusive Community Buildings program, will allow the non-profit Lake District Recreation Association (LDRA) to significantly cut operating costs, with savings estimated at $14,000 per month on electricity alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ADVERTISEMENT:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"alignnormal\">[metaslider id=&#8221;56530&#8243;]<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"alignnormal\">[metaslider id=&#8221;56506&#8243;]<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Clark said the investment is about more than energy efficiency \u2014 it\u2019s about protecting a community cornerstone that has served generations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cArenas like this are pillars of our communities,\u201d Clark said during the announcement, noting the Sackville Arena\u2019s more than 50 years of service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re where young people learn teamwork, discipline and character, and they absolutely need to be maintained, sustained and improved.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/IMG_0012-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-62026\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Allan Smith, president of the Lake District Rec Association, speaks at the federal announcement at the Sackville Arena on Friday evening. (Healey photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>According to LDRA president Allan Smith, the savings will be reinvested directly back into the facility, helping ensure the arena remains viable for decades to come.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis $1.3 million positions this arena to be operational for the next 10, 15, 20 \u2014 even 50 years,\u201d Smith said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat $14,000 a month we save on power is going right back into the operation of the arena.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ADVERTISEMENT:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"alignnormal\">[metaslider id=&#8221;56526&#8243;]<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the first planned upgrades will be improvements to the rink boards, with additional improvements expected as the savings accumulate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Smith added that the project will also dramatically reduce the arena\u2019s carbon footprint, placing it among the greenest arenas in Canada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Installation of the solar panels is already underway, with visible progress expected over the coming weeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Several local and provincial leaders were on hand for the announcement, including HRM Councillor Cathy Deagle Gammon, former councillor Paul Russell, and NDP MLA Paul Wozney, underscoring the broad support for the project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Clark said the timing of the announcement, made just before puck drop at a major community tournament, was fitting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTo be able to announce this here, during an event like the Bill Chase Cup, really shows what this is all about,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis ensures kids, families and community members will be using this facility for many years to come.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"alignnormal\">[metaslider id=&#8221;56179&#8243;]<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"alignnormal\">[metaslider id=&#8221;56514&#8243;]<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"alignnormal\">[metaslider id=&#8221;56191&#8243;]<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>LOWER SACKVILLE: A major federal investment announced Friday evening is set to give the Sackville Arena a new lease on life, while saving thousands of dollars every month and strengthening its role as a community hub.
