DARTMOUTH:<\/strong> The Nova Scotia SPCA College of Animal Welfare\u00a0is taking applications for the inaugural Veterinary Technician class\u00a0expected to start this spring.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe two-year Veterinary Technician Program prepares students for a career in the animal care industry,\u201d said college vice-president, Marni Tuttle. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cStudents will develop skills to assist veterinarians in treating animals by administering medications, testing blood and other samples, taking X-rays, administering anesthesia and monitoring patients during and after surgery.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The program will take place at the newly renovated college in Burnside. Students will\u00a0engage in in-class learning, gain\u00a0hands-on\u00a0experience, and complete 240 hours of a clinical internship.\u00a0\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prerequisites\u00a0for the program include\u00a0a grade 12\u00a0diploma,\u00a0adult\u00a0diploma, or GED, as well as a recommended average of 75% or higher in each of the following courses: Grade 12 English, Grade 12 Academic Math or Pre-Calculus, Grade 11 or 12 Biology, and Grade 11 or 12 Chemistry.\u00a0

\u201cThis is exciting growth from\u00a0our\u00a0veterinary assistant program,\u00a0which we have been running for five years now, and will continue to offer,\u201d said Tuttle.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHaving a\u00a0second veterinary technician program being offered in Nova Scotia will make a\u00a0significant impact on animal welfare in our region.\u201d\u00a0

Applicants can apply now at\u00a0www.spcacollege.ca<\/a>\u00a0for\u00a0an expected\u00a0start date of May 2026 and graduation in June 2028. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The program is still pending approval from the Department of Advanced Education and\u00a0Labour\u00a0once the renovations are complete.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
