{"id":62323,"date":"2026-02-14T13:30:00","date_gmt":"2026-02-14T17:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelaker.ca\/?p=62323"},"modified":"2026-02-14T13:30:00","modified_gmt":"2026-02-14T17:30:00","slug":"1000-plus-say-no-to-hrms-property-tax-hike-rhpns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/?p=62323","title":{"rendered":"1,000-plus say no to HRM&#8217;s property tax hike: RHPNS"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"alignnormal\">[metaslider id=&#8221;56506&#8243;]<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>HALIFAX:<\/strong> More than 1,000 people have now signed up to a campaign opposing Halifax\u00a0Regional Municipality&#8217;s proposed 10.9\u00a0per cent\u00a0property tax increase. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since its release in January, the Stop the Property Tax Hike campaign has been receiving growing support from families,&nbsp;residents&nbsp;and businesses across Halifax to push back against the proposed 10.9&nbsp;per cent&nbsp;property tax increase for this year, with an&nbsp;additional&nbsp;40 per cent planned for the next four years.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis momentum tells us people have had enough,\u201d said Kevin Russell, Rental Housing Providers of Nova Scotia, the campaign&#8217;s sponsor. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere are 16 districts across HRM, and we receive signatures from residents from every single one of them.\u201d\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Earlier today, Rental Housing Providers of Nova Scotia delivered forms with more than 1,000 signatures from residents and businesses to Council, who are against the hike and wondering how they will be able to afford a property tax increase five times the rate of inflation. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ADVERTISEMENT:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"alignnormal\">[metaslider id=&#8221;56526&#8243;]<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>A recent\u00a0public opinion\u00a0survey\u00a0found that 74\u00a0per cent\u00a0of Halifax residents want council to limit tax increases, even if it means cutting services and programs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The same survey\u00a0showed\u00a069\u00a0per cent\u00a0of\u00a0HRM\u00a0residents are dissatisfied with property taxes.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;These&nbsp;numbers and&nbsp;signatures send a clear message to Council that the municipality needs to review&nbsp;and reduce&nbsp;their spending instead of reaching deeper into people&#8217;s pockets while residents and families are already stretched thin with the rising cost of living,&#8221;&nbsp;added Russell.&nbsp; &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The campaign is urging City Hall to adopt an &#8216;affordability lens&#8217; for budget decisions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ADVERTISEMENT:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"alignnormal\">[metaslider id=&#8221;56179&#8243;]<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>This includes taking a harder look at spending priorities, reviewing the municipal payroll where possible, and looking for savings in day-to-day operations \u2013 before adding this tax increase.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Russell said there is still time for residents to sign up for the Stop the Property Tax Hike&nbsp;campaign&nbsp;by:&nbsp; &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Heading to StopTheRateHikes.ca and adding their\u00a0name\u00a0in opposition; \u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sending emails to the\u00a0Mayor\u00a0and\u00a0Councillors\u00a0making it clear a 10.9\u00a0per cent\u00a0hike\u00a0is unacceptable;
