{"id":62412,"date":"2026-02-16T18:13:26","date_gmt":"2026-02-16T22:13:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelaker.ca\/?p=62412"},"modified":"2026-02-16T18:13:26","modified_gmt":"2026-02-16T22:13:26","slug":"dutch-settlement-elementary-students-take-learning-global-with-multicultural-festival","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/?p=62412","title":{"rendered":"Dutch Settlement Elementary students take learning global with multicultural festival"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"alignnormal\">[metaslider id=&#8221;56514&#8243;]<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>(Editor&#8217;s Note: For the full quality pictures please see the story on our main website)<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>DUTCH SETTLEMENT<\/strong>: Grade 6 students at Dutch Settlement Elementary School (DSES) got a taste of the world on Friday, Feb. 13, as they hosted their annual Multicultural Festival, the culmination of a six-week classroom project led by teacher John Ardley.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The festival saw students select a country, research key facts, and then bring in a food item connected to that nation to share with visitors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For Sawyer Vacheresse, that meant focusing on Cuba \u2014 and making a Cuban smoothie featuring banana, mango, and honey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt was very fun, creating my recipe and researching,\u201d Sawyer said. \u201cI thought it was very interesting and I learned many things that I did not know before.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ADVERTISEMENT:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"alignnormal\">[metaslider id=&#8221;56376&#8243;]<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"alignnormal\">[metaslider id=&#8221;56526&#8243;]<\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/IMG_0578-683x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-62448\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">(Healey photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Sawyer said the project helped him realize just how many countries exist around the world, and how each has its own unique culture and food.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat many countries \u2014 there\u2019s many countries in the world, and all those countries have amazing food,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Addison Gignac chose Brazil for a personal reason, saying she wanted to make a friend happy who is from there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She said the project was something she would gladly do again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think I\u2019d do it again. It\u2019s really fun,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Addison also said one of the biggest takeaways was learning how different countries can be from one another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNot every country is the same,\u201d Gignac said, noting differences in language, sports, and culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ADVERTISEMENT:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"alignnormal\">[metaslider id=&#8221;56509&#8243;]<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"alignnormal\">[metaslider id=&#8221;56179&#8243;]<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, Nate Bonner chose Sweden, a country he learned is known for sports and has more than 100,000 lakes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the food portion of the project, Nate made a Swedish chocolate cake with mocha glaze a dessert so popular he ran out before the festival ended.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt was very popular, and I\u2019m all out,\u201d he said, meaning our Pat Healey couldn&#8217;t try it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nate said the best part of the project was getting to learn what his chosen country is all about.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI like how you get to find out how your country that you picked\u2026 what\u2019s all about it,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Teacher John Ardley proudly reflected on his students&#8217; efforts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m very proud of my students for all the work they&#8217;ve done on this. They&#8217;ve been working on for six weeks, and it&#8217;s a great way to showcase their work,\u201d he said in an interview with The Laker News.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a fun and engaging way for all the students and parents to come down and learn all about the countries around the world.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He explained why he continues the tradition annually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Well, the students learn a lot, for starters. And as I said, it&#8217;s a great interactive way for everyone to celebrate cultures from around the world,\u201d Ardley said. \u201cIt&#8217;s something I always have to do every year.
