{"id":63038,"date":"2026-03-15T18:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-03-15T21:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelaker.ca\/?p=63038"},"modified":"2026-03-15T18:00:00","modified_gmt":"2026-03-15T21:00:00","slug":"memorial-tournament-presentation-honours-legacy-of-trevor-ettinger-and-jeff-smith","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/?p=63038","title":{"rendered":"Memorial tournament presentation honours legacy of Trevor Ettinger and Jeff Smith"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"alignnormal\">[metaslider id=&#8221;56509&#8243;]<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>LANTZ:<\/strong> A special moment of remembrance and gratitude took place Sunday afternoon March 15 at the Trevor Ettinger\u2013Jeff Smith Memorial Tournament at the East Hants Sportsplex.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Players, coaches, parents, and spectators gathered in the lobby as East Hants Minor Hockey Association Recruiting and Events Coordinator Evan Taylor spoke about the meaning behind the tournament and the lasting legacy of Trevor Ettinger and Jeff Smith.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Taylor said the annual event is more than just hockey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis week is more than just a tournament. It\u2019s about legacy,\u201d Taylor told those gathered at the rink.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are here to remember Trevor and Jeff, two fantastic athletes who represented the very best of East Hants.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He noted that the two young men left an impression on the local hockey community, not only through their skill on the ice but through their character off it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ADVERTISEMENT:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"alignnormal\">[metaslider id=&#8221;56514&#8243;]<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"alignnormal\">[metaslider id=&#8221;56511&#8243;]<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>But Taylor also took time to recognize the families who helped shape them, particularly their mothers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA great man doesn\u2019t just appear out of nowhere,\u201d Taylor said. \u201cThey are built, coached, and loved into existence by their mothers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the ceremony, a special presentation of two EHMHA jerseys with their last names and numbers on the back was made to Mabel Smith, Jeff\u2019s mother, and Edna Ettinger, Trevor\u2019s mom, acknowledging the many years of support and dedication they have given to the sport and the community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou spent countless hours in the freezing rinks and the long miles on the road, standing by their side through every win and every loss,\u201d Taylor said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou taught them that while hockey is a game, character is what lasts.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/IMG_6843-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-63040\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The presentation of the two jerseys to Mabel and Edna from EHMHA officials at the Trevor Ettinger-Jeff Smith Memorial Tournament. (Healey photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Following the presentation, Mabel Smith addressed the crowd alongside Edna, thanking those in attendance and reflecting on the memories the tournament continues to bring back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are honoured to be here today to watch some exciting games,\u201d Smith said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cJeff and Trevor were great hockey players, but more importantly they were wonderful sons, brothers, grandsons, cousins and friends.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She added that returning to the rink and seeing familiar faces in the East Hants hockey community remains special for both families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s so nice to be back and see the coaches and familiar faces and to continue this tournament in memory of them,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ADVERTISEMENT:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"alignnormal\">[metaslider id=&#8221;56376&#8243;]<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"alignnormal\">[metaslider id=&#8221;56506&#8243;]<\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/IMG_6885-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-63042\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Mabel Smith speaks following the presentation to her and Edna Ettinger.
