{"id":63577,"date":"2026-04-03T16:12:54","date_gmt":"2026-04-03T19:12:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelaker.ca\/?p=63577"},"modified":"2026-04-03T16:12:54","modified_gmt":"2026-04-03T19:12:54","slug":"new-wildland-fire-truck-boosts-response-at-station-40-in-dutch-settlement","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/?p=63577","title":{"rendered":"New wildland fire truck boosts response at Station 40 in Dutch Settlement"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"alignnormal\">[metaslider id=&#8221;56501&#8243;]<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>DUTCH SETTLEMENT:<\/strong> Firefighters in Dutch Settlement are better equipped than ever to tackle wildfires this season, with a new specialized wildland truck set to go into service at Station 40.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The addition is part of a broader effort by Halifax Regional Fire &amp; Emergency (HRFE) to strengthen wildfire response across rural parts of the municipality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHRFE is increasing its ability to combat wildfires by investing in specialized equipment designed for this purpose,\u201d said District 4 Platoon Captain Vinny Jordan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The new wildland unit is one of three being deployed across the region, with others stationed in Station 23 Chezzetcook and Station 50 Hammonds Plains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Designed specifically for rugged terrain, the trucks are lighter, highly maneuverable, and equipped with four-wheel drive, allowing crews to reach remote areas that traditional fire engines and tankers cannot access.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/IMG_1995-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-63590\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Some of the gear on the new truck. It is also outfitted with a 60-metre hose reel, forestry tools, two portable pumps, and hundreds of feet of forestry hose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThese trucks are light, maneuverable and have four-wheel drive to bring firefighters and water to remote areas that traditional engines struggle to reach,\u201d said Jordan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re a key piece of equipment in keeping both our crews and communities safe during wildfire events.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/IMG_1943-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-63586\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">A new portable pump for the firefighters. (Submitted photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>In addition to the wildland trucks, HRFE has also introduced two new Structure Protection Units (SPUs), which will be based in Fall River and Tantallon, areas considered more suburban but still at risk during wildfire events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The SPUs are mobile trailers designed to help protect homes when a wildfire approaches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each unit includes a large supply of sprinkler heads that can be set up around properties to create a rainfall-like effect, increasing humidity and helping slow or stop the spread of fire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThese trailers can be brought in and set up to protect an area of homes from an approaching wildfire,\u201d said Jordan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each SPU is equipped with hoses, chainsaws, portable pumps, water storage tanks, ladders, and other tools, allowing crews to quickly establish water supply and defensive systems wherever needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The cost of each trailer is approximately $130,000.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/IMG_1977-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-63588\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Showing off some of the storage area for wildland firefighting tools.
