{"id":8937,"date":"2018-11-15T11:03:51","date_gmt":"2018-11-15T15:03:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelaker.ca\/?p=8937"},"modified":"2018-11-15T11:03:51","modified_gmt":"2018-11-15T15:03:51","slug":"rcmp-warn-of-social-media-extortion-scam-targeting-youths","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/?p=8937","title":{"rendered":"RCMP warn of social media extortion scam targeting youths"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>FALL RIVER:<\/strong> Nova Scotia RCMP is investigating a social media extortion scam and are advising the public in the event it is happening elsewhere in the province.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this week, Kings District RCMP responded to a complaint involving multiple social media accounts.\u00a0 Preliminary investigation revealed that someone had gained access to the social media accounts of several female youths.<\/p>\n<p>In order to regain control of their accounts, demands for provocative photos\/videos \u200eor their friend&#8217;s social media account log in information were made. If the victim did not comply, the scammer threatened to send out explicit content from their social media account.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are asking anyone impacted by this to come forward and report it to police&#8221; says Cpl. Jennifer Clarke, Nova Scotia RCMP Public Information Officer. &#8220;We also want to encourage parents and guardians to talk to their children about what they are sharing online, the potential risks associated and how to protect themselves.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Cpl.
