{"id":8983,"date":"2018-11-17T10:00:34","date_gmt":"2018-11-17T14:00:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelaker.ca\/?p=8983"},"modified":"2018-11-17T10:00:34","modified_gmt":"2018-11-17T14:00:34","slug":"turning-a-negative-into-a-positive","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/?p=8983","title":{"rendered":"Turning a negative into a positive"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"StoryBody\" class=\"rtEditor\" title=\"(double-click to edit)\" data-role=\"none\">\n<p><strong>FLETCHERS LAKE: <\/strong>The students in Nicole Legrow\u2019s Grade 5 class at Holland Road Elementary School have turned something that many view as a negative into a positive, through the reading graffiti wall.<\/p>\n<p>A reading graffiti wall is a place on the wall in the classroom where students can write powerful quotes that they find in the books they are reading.<\/p>\n<p>Piper Morrison; William Isenor; and Julia Lace were three of the students who spoke to <em>The Laker<\/em> about it as their fellow classmates listened in on Nov. 13.<\/p>\n<p>William, who calls Fall River home, said the wall inspires him and his classmates.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we find something in the books,w e can write it on the wall and if other people are sad they can look at it,\u201d said William. \u201cIt\u2019s like a positive boost.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Piper, of Lakeview, said it\u2019s a way to feel welcomed into the classroom.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s nice to read positive things out of books,\u201d she said. \u201cI think sometimes you can read books and they can be weird, but these are positive messages.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Julia said she feels encouraged by reading all of the positive messages up on the board.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s good to know that a lot of the books we\u2019re reading have inspiring messages,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Teacher Nicole Legrow explained where she got the idea to bring the learning tool to the classroom. She went to a conference on literacy in 2017.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI saw it on Pinterest and thought what a great way to take what were reading and put it into the classroom as a way to inspire the kids,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>She said the point is that all the quotes are positive messages.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are things that when you want to give up the messages inspire them,\u201d said Legrow. \u201cThe kids are really excited when they find a really great quote.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The reading graffiti wall can also help the students chose what book they may want to read next.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you like the quote, you can see what book it is from and go pick that book,\u201d Julia, who lives in Fall River, said.<\/p>\n<p>Piper said when she can\u2019t concentrate she looks at the reading graffiti wall and it helps her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just remember how much work went into putting those positive messages in the books we\u2019re reading and how it can help me concentrate,\u201d she said. \u201cThat\u2019s why I like the whole point of the wall.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Why a graffiti wall?
