{"id":9037,"date":"2018-11-21T08:30:48","date_gmt":"2018-11-21T12:30:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelaker.ca\/?p=9037"},"modified":"2018-11-21T08:30:48","modified_gmt":"2018-11-21T12:30:48","slug":"schmidts-hockey-dreams-takes-him-to-germany","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/?p=9037","title":{"rendered":"Schmidt\u2019s hockey dreams takes him to Germany"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"StoryBody\" class=\"rtEditor\" title=\"(double-click to edit)\" data-role=\"none\">\n<p><strong><span class=\"st\">GERMANY: <\/span><\/strong><span class=\"st\">Olafr<\/span><span class=\"st\"> Schmidt is getting the best of both worlds\u2014playing the sport he loves, while experiencing the beauty of many European countries.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"st\">Schmidt, a product from Lakeview, is suiting up with German Tier 2 team <span class=\"_5yl5\">Lausitzer F\u00fcchse<\/span> (DEL2) where he has compiled a 2.82 Goals Against Average in 15 games played, including a shutout. He also has a 90.3 save percentage. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"st\">He can play in the Germany pro leagues with being classified as an import player because of his German ancestry on his fathers family side. He trains with Finn Goalie development instructor Jack Hartigan, who was the first to suggest he pursue a career overseas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"st\">\u201cHaving a German passport gave me an opportunity to play as a non import in leagues that only allow a limited number of imported players,\u201d said Schmidt after a game on Nov. 17. \u201cMy first year playing hockey in Germany was when I was 18.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_9038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9038\" style=\"width: 700px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-9038 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/46425160_299844370639619_1322719085284294656_n.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"467\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-9038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lakeview&#8217;s Olafr Schmidt readies to man the net in Germany. (Submitted photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span class=\"st\">Hartigan and Schmidt agreed the best thing for him would be to get his foot into the door early in Germany. So he bought an airplane ticket and off he went.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"st\">\u201cI packed my bags and bought a one way ticket to go play a season for Rosenheim in the German Junior league,\u201d said Schmidt. \u201cIt was an eye opening season for me.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"st\">The Nashville Predator fan returned to Canada the following year to finish his eligible junior years with one goal in mind\u2014returning to play professionally in Germany.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"st\">\u201cAfter my final year of junior in Canada, with the help of Jack and others, I received a contract offer from Preussen Berlin in the Oberliga and made the jump,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"st\">Before going across the Atlantic Ocean, Schmidt saw goaltending time with Lockview High for one year, while he donned the junior hockey jerseys in Chester; Windsor; Rosenheim, Germany; St. Stephen Aces; and Kamloops, B.C. <\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_9039\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9039\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-9039 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/46454387_2206044703049007_3831165352641822720_n-e1542754840473.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-9039\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Olafr Schmidt makes a save during a league game in Germany. (Submitted photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span class=\"st\">After playing in Kamloops, Schmidt made the move to <\/span>Preussen Berlin in the German Oberliga, where he played two seasons.<\/p>\n<p>Schmidt never imagined when he was younger that hockey would take him to Germany.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI always knew I would try to pursue hockey for as long as I could, and its led me here,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Playing in Germany, and with his family and best friend Brenna Boyd, back in Fall River and area, Schmidt does say he misses them. <span class=\"st\">Sara Moignot is his mom.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThough I miss Nova Scotia at times, I really enjoy myself on and off the ice here,\u201d Schmidt said. \u201cGermany is home to a lot of beautiful cities with unique cultures, an enthusiastic hockey fan base with a fantastic arena atmospheres.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m very grateful for the opportunity I have to build a career here doing what I love.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><em><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>GERMANY: Olafr Schmidt is getting the best of both worlds\u2014playing the sport he loves, while experiencing the beauty of many European countries.
