{"id":9086,"date":"2018-11-28T12:00:53","date_gmt":"2018-11-28T16:00:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelaker.ca\/?p=9086"},"modified":"2018-11-28T12:00:53","modified_gmt":"2018-11-28T16:00:53","slug":"lhs-students-take-their-love-of-music-to-nsywe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/?p=9086","title":{"rendered":"LHS students take their love of music to NSYWE"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>FALL RIVER: <\/strong>Seven Lockview High band students are thrilled to be doing something they love alongside peers from Cape Breton to Yarmouth as members of the Nova Scotia Youth Wind Ensemble (NSYWE).<\/p>\n<p>Maddi Tufts of Beaver Bank; Isabelle Conrad of Beaver Bank; Keely Lenihan of Waverley; Anneka Miller of Fall River; Samantha Conrad of Beaver Bank; Dylan Rutledge of Grand Lake; and\u00a0Julianne Le Lacheur of Fall River have all been selected to the NSYWE following auditions.<\/p>\n<p>Keigan Allen; Jill Rowan; and Daniel Moser are also members, but were missing on the day <em>The Laker<\/em> stopped by.<\/p>\n<p>Tufts said being a member of the NSYWE enhances dedication.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think we\u2019re more profound in music and want to find something a little more challenging,\u201d said Tufts, from Beaver Bank.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt looks really good on a resume to be in it looking for jobs and for university applications.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Isabelle Conrad said it\u2019s a really big achievement for someone to get into the ensemble.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt really means a lot after auditioning,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Rutledge said he was attracted to join band to be around others that love what they do.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can all do it together and it creates a friendship forever,\u201d said Rutledge, who calls Grand Lake home.<\/p>\n<p>The students have been doing band between five and eight years in total, most of them starting in Grade 6.<\/p>\n<p>For Lenihan, she got into to music because of her sister.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe play the same instrument so I always wanted to be like my sister, so going into band I played the same instrument and kept auditioning for the same thing she would.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow, it\u2019s more like I really like the people and playing the hard music.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tufts grew up in a musical family and knew she wanted to do something in that regard.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI started looking around the province and NSYWE really caught my eye because I\u2019m a big classical music fan and the repertoire they play there is so much different than the stuff we play in the high school band,\u201d she said. \u201cI think the challenge for people like myself who want to go into music is so beneficial.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Band is something that unites people, Rutledge said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have friends across the province and some across the country now through playing in band,\u201d he said. \u201cBand unites us to be able to create a beautiful sound out of, basically, pieces of metal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lachey was looking for a group of people to fit in with, and being apart of the band did just that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese wonderful band nerds caught my attention and honestly have changed my life,\u201d Lachey said.<\/p>\n<p>Isabelle Conrad said being in band means you\u2019re with like-minded people.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn school you\u2019re not always with people who take band seriously, but playing in a group where everyone had to audition means they\u2019re really good and dedicated to what they\u2019re doing,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Tufts said ensembles like NSYWE is all about finding new comfort zones and meeting new people.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s just like a sports team, but a tighter knit family,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s about showing an interest in what your interested in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rutledge said once you finish a concert, the adrenaline rush is real.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s such a great feeling when you\u2019ve finished the most challenging repertoire you can think of and you get a big ovation,\u201d he said. \u201cThe moment of silence between finishing and the claps, that\u2019s the best feeling.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>FALL RIVER: Seven Lockview High band students are thrilled to be doing something they love alongside peers from Cape Breton to Yarmouth as members of the Nova Scotia Youth Wind Ensemble (NSYWE).
