{"id":9282,"date":"2018-12-19T08:30:22","date_gmt":"2018-12-19T12:30:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelaker.ca\/?p=9282"},"modified":"2018-12-19T08:30:22","modified_gmt":"2018-12-19T12:30:22","slug":"holland-road-students-give-generously","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/?p=9282","title":{"rendered":"Holland Road students give generously"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"StoryBody\" class=\"rtEditor\" title=\"(double-click to edit)\" data-role=\"none\">\n<p><strong>WINDSOR JUNCTION: <\/strong>The Lions Christmas Express got an unexpected boost in generous donations as they sorted already collected items at the Windsor Junction Community Centre on Dec. 15.<\/p>\n<p>Students in Nicole Legrow\u2019s Grade 5 class at Holland Road Elementary School wanted to give back to their community this Christmas season. (Healey photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A week after Legrow mentioned to them what they were doing, the kids joined their teacher in delivering more than 15 boxes filled with donated food. That was all just from their classroom.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it\u2019s really good what we did because some kids and families don\u2019t have as much as we do,\u201d Ava Burrows said. \u201cWe\u2019re happy to be helping the less fortunate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jersey Swinemar said she is grateful for being able to give back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s better to give back than to get,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=9nSh3HrKJQA\"><strong>VIDEO: Santa&#8217;s Little Elves<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>She said there was a lot of boxes to be packed by the students.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was definitely worth it,\u201d added Aili Pearcey.<\/p>\n<p>Legrow already has plans to begin collecting donations earlier next year and possibly getting the whole school in Fletchers Lake involved.<\/p>\n<p>Swinemar said helping out gets her in the Christmas spirit, but also she learned a valuable lesson.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt definitely made me realize that we\u2019re really lucky,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Pearcey said she had a feeling she knew what the reaction to those receiving help from the Christmas Express would be.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think they will be really proud of what we did for them,\u201d she said. \u201cI think we\u2019re proud of what we did too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Missionaries from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints assisted organizers with sorting the donated food that had been collected.<\/p>\n<p>The missionaries were from across the U.S.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_9286\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9286\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-9286 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/050-e1545101672587.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-9286\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Missionaries from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints helped sort food for the Lions Christmas Express at the WJCC on Dec. 15.
