{"id":9663,"date":"2019-02-14T14:30:26","date_gmt":"2019-02-14T18:30:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelaker.ca\/?p=9663"},"modified":"2019-02-14T14:30:26","modified_gmt":"2019-02-14T18:30:26","slug":"mcintyre-ready-to-soak-up-canada-games","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/?p=9663","title":{"rendered":"McIntyre ready to soak up Canada Games"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"StoryBody\" class=\"rtEditor\" title=\"(double-click to edit)\" data-role=\"none\">\n<p><strong>FALL RIVER: <\/strong>When Grace McIntyre checked her phone at school one day in late January, she saw a very important email had arrived in her inbox.<\/p>\n<p>The Fall River girl immediately went to Mr. Crawford, who was teaching the phys-ed class at Lockview High, seeking his permission to check the email which came from Cross Country Skiing Nova Scotia regarding the Canada Games, being held in Red Deer, Alta.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI asked him if I could take a minute to read it,\u201d recalled McIntyre. \u201cHe said sure, as long as he could read it with me. So I read the email and it was to confirm that I made the team.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was so excited and it was so overwhelming at the same time. It was like this huge weight had been lifted off of my shoulders.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=jo8WtRX8QmQ\"><strong>VIDEO: McIntyre grabs bronze<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_9715\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9715\" style=\"width: 450px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-9715 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/image1-e1550251991882.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"600\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-9715\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Grace McIntyre is ready for Red Deer. (Submitted photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The news of her making the team came after the decision by a selection committee who was tasked with deciding who made the team.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a very stressful time, as you could imagine,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>McIntyre is the youngest athlete to make the CWG Cross Country Ski team since they put in a percentage and time requirement in the qualifying process for nominating skiers to the team. She will be competing against female cross country skiiers aged 14-23 in Red Deer.<\/p>\n<p>Based on her age of 14-years-old, McIntyre does have the possibility of competing three times with N.S.\u2014two more after this year\u2014at the Canada Games.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt means so much to me to be able to go and represent my province,\u201d said McIntyre. \u201cIt makes me feel accomplished, knowing that I got myself here with hard work, and dedication to the sport. Every single bit of training has paid off, long car rides to find snow, long hours in the gym and early morning runs in the summer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She said the team has been racing and training a lot, including competitions one which saw her nab bronze at the Maritime Cup.<\/p>\n<p>McIntyre is remaining level-headed as to what she\u2019s expecting at the Canada Games.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cComing from a small team like Nova Scotia I\u2019m not going with the expectation to win, but to surprise myself and hopefully make some great times,\u201d said McIntyre. \u201cThis will surely be a great way to better myself as a racer and as an athlete, and make new friends and great memories.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>FALL RIVER: When Grace McIntyre checked her phone at school one day in late January, she saw a very important email had arrived in her inbox.
